When I was learning to drive, my grandfather had a '94 4 cylinder manual 4x2 Ranger. Cruising on the interstate, he would turn off the A/C when climbing hills to maintain speed.

He replaced it with a '98 4.0 manual single cab , long bed, 4x4. It definitely had more grunt than the 4 cylinder, but it always felt like it just didn't want to get moving. It was slow to rev and didn't like to shift fast. I had a '99 4 cylinder GMC Sonoma manual 4x2 at the same time and although I doubt it would have won in a race, it felt faster.

Our 4 cylinder is much stronger and gets better milage to boot. The best tank I ever saw when I borrowed his Ranger was 17mpg. The frame eventually rusted out with the rear spring perches breaking off.

I only have two digital photos of the truck and this is the best. Oddly, I have every digital picture he ever took (I saved them from his computer after he was diagnosed with Alzheimers.) He took thousands of pictures, but as far as I can tell, not one of his truck.

My trusty '99 XLT had 250K+ miles when I sold it.
But the 3.0sl0w V6 never got more than 22 mpg.... at best, even with all highway driving.

My 2020 STX has never gotten LESS than 22 mpg.
Has almost double the HP
almost double the torque
More than double the gears!

and I LOVE how the 2.3 Ecoboost runs!
I now have a 5 Star tune and run 93 octane.....Yowzer does this truck move!

My first brand new vehicle was a 1994 Ranger Supercab 4x2. Your story reminded me how many years ago that was. The stock Firestone tires on that thing were an oddball 14" and they had no traction in the snow and I lived in the Syracuse, NY area. A friend turned me onto Goodyear Wrangler APT's which came in that 14" size. They turned it into a winter monster. It was a V6 3.0l with a five speed manual and no AC.

And I thank you for you work.
The 4G can still demand a good price. Carmax has a 2011 Ranger with 58K miles with a sticker of $25K.
WOW! I paid $19K out the door for my 2005 Edge Ranger SuperCab V6 4x4 with Tow Package!
Inflation is HERE Boys and Girls!

I was really disappointed when I saw the actual unmasked 6g North American Ranger recently! Our 5g Rangers definitely look better.....IMHO

I could tell you, but then I’d have to….
I too like the 5G Ranger's looks way better than the 6G version. I want to wait to see the new version live but still won't be getting one as I love my 5G Lariat Ranger too much.
I can tell you the new one looks much better in real life than it did in the media. Absolutely love mine… inside and out…
