When I was learning to drive, my grandfather had a '94 4 cylinder manual 4x2 Ranger. Cruising on the interstate, he would turn off the A/C when climbing hills to maintain speed.
He replaced it with a '98 4.0 manual single cab , long bed, 4x4. It definitely had more grunt than the 4 cylinder, but it always felt like it just didn't want to get moving. It was slow to rev and didn't like to shift fast. I had a '99 4 cylinder GMC Sonoma manual 4x2 at the same time and although I doubt it would have won in a race, it felt faster.
Our 4 cylinder is much stronger and gets better milage to boot. The best tank I ever saw when I borrowed his Ranger was 17mpg. The frame eventually rusted out with the rear spring perches breaking off.
I only have two digital photos of the truck and this is the best. Oddly, I have every digital picture he ever took (I saved them from his computer after he was diagnosed with Alzheimers.) He took thousands of pictures, but as far as I can tell, not one of his truck.
