I just crossed 1 year as a Ranger owner and the truck said it was time for an oil change. I took it in a couple of weeks ago with a bit over 2,900 miles on the clock. The algorithm must have a 1 year trigger if the miles are really low.
The manual says:
"Your vehicle has an Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor system, a message appears in the information display at the proper oil change interval. This interval may be up to one year or 10000 mi (16,000 km), hybrid vehicles may exceed 10000 mi (16,000 km)."

If the Ranger ends up being as dependable as the last couple of MB the wife has had I'll be thrilled . I think it's more the bean counters at Ford axed it before they could even implement the idea, lol.
An actual sensor or an algorithm guessing at the actual quality....hmm. I'll go with the sensor. Never had one to fail.
The quality of name-brand oil is very high. The trade off of having a sensor versus "best practice" predictions isn't worth the extra cost in my opinion. MB likes to over-engineer. It's what's expected of them.
