OFF ROAD TIRE / WHEEL QUESTION - '20 Lariat 4 X 4

There's SO much info on Off-Road Tire / Wheel Combo's it's hard to find the right stuff... Hard to decifer some of the info out there.... ALL I WANT TO DO is have a set of cost-effective (not too cheap) steel wheels in a smaller rim size (for more side-wall) but the same exact outside diameter and width (for no speedo change) but with good off-road traction. Right now I have Goodrich Trail Terrains in stock size on stock 18" rims on my '20 Lariat 4 X 4 Ranger. Want to have a set of off-road / serious mud snows around that I can just bolt up when the need arises... SOMEbody on this thread has to have to Hot Set Up, right??

IMHO, just keep the factory wheel size and go up a percentage or two on the profile and a size narrower. That's what I did and didn't effect my speedometer enough to worry about. Any change in sidewall you're looking for makes very minimal difference as well. I just wanted every little bit more height/clearance I could manage, and I guess my sidewall is 3/4" taller.

There is no hot setup for both mud AND snow. A tread design that kicks ass in one, will suck ass in the other.

A good all terrain will do decently in both, but the performance jump between the tires you have now and a set of all terrains would hardly be worth the price of admission for a dedicated weekend set.

Just get some BFG A/T's for your stock wheels and call it a day.

Blmpkn: Thanks! I do have BFG Trail Terrains on now on stock rims. Not as aggressive as A/T's but 3 snow flake rated. All Terrains (doesn't matter the brand) are what I'm looking for but fatter, for more low-pressure off road work with more sidewall. Running these lower profile stock size at lower pressures off road can be risky with such skinny aspect ratio sidewalls. I'm not trying to "rock crawl," but I do tow a Featherlite trailer with my toys in it, so I want some good off-road traction...

a general rule of thumb (at least to get you started) is 1" in wheel is 5% in tire. IE 265/65r18 is approximately the same as 265/70r17.

Understanding what you are looking for i would recommend one tire over the BFG KO2. That tire is the Firestone Destination XT. I already have a thread that includes a extensive review, just can't remember what page it is on. That said if you keep the factory wheels you will need to go bigger. It is available in 275/65/18 wich is a true 32 and should fit without any suspension modifications. You will need to recalibrate the speedometer, but that is simple enough depending on if you go with Forscan or get a tune.

Wait I thought 275/65/18 would rub without full 2.5 inch level. I have the Bilstein 5100s set at 1.8 and from the feedback I saw around the forum, I was under the impression the largest I could go with no rub is 31.6 in diameter. Are you confirming the 32s would fit with no rub?

It shouldnt be a problem with the Firestones as long as you are on the factory wheels amd no spacers of sorts. I ran 285/70-17's on my Ranger with the Old Man EMU lift and I only had rub at full lock both directions. To get way from said rub all I had to do was come off of full lock by a few degrees in the steering wheel.

That is true. You can actually get OEM steel 16 inch wheels for the Ranger. A stock size would be 255(or 265)/70-16. The Destination XT isn't available in that size but the Destination AT2 is. Can't say if it will be up to the task you are wanting to do, but might do just what you want

For the most part yes. Easy sizing would be adding 5 to the profile(middle number) for every inch you take away on the wheel.

I ran a set of 285/70r17 BFG KO2s (33") completely stock and barely kissed the crash bar in the passenger's side when turned full and in reverse. They fit. BFGs do run a tad small, compared to other brands of the same side.

You can run 16s, but there does come a point where too much sidewall makes things a bit squirrley. I, personally, think 17s are the sweet spot up to 35" tires. You get plenty of sidewall in a 33 or 34" tire.
