Have not had the need for one yet. So before the need arises (my 19 & 21 aren't getting any newer) I am in the market for an OBD 2 scanner. Suggestion for a purchase. What are you all using? Thanks. ?

I use a basic Innova scanner I got from AutoZone for 99 bucks, and it gets the job done

I’m not an expert, but I would look into an OBD dongle and the best app taking into account your vehicle and phone. I used OBDFusion and an optional software upgrade for my aging Infiniti G35. My Ranger hasn’t thrown a code yet, but when it does I’ll be trying it before buying anything else.

ForScan is the way to go here. OBDEX is the dongle to look for. Plenty of information on here for it.

Forscan is what you need. It will scan all your modules not just the PCM
It will scan the PCM with no problems and do all sorts of things with it for troubleshooting. You just can't reconfigure it is all.

I know Forscan is Ford specific yes. Should have been more clear our 19 is Ranger 21 is a cr v so I would be interested in something that would work with both. No issues as of yet I am trying to be proactive so I can learn. Thanks again

Out of curiosity what is your current skill level when it comes to diagnosis and troubleshooting? Are you pretty proficient or are you pretty green to the whole thing?

What capabilities you looking for just a code reader or something that has bi-directional capabilities?
Personally I would look on Amazon with prime day going on find the best bi-directional scanner I could afford.

X mechanic by trade , just green to all the computerized stuff. Don't own a laptop. Been lucky with all late model vehicles owned as have never had a CEL. (hope I don't jinx myself) I plan on keeping these so I am trying to get a grip on things.

Because both vehicles are newer, I would recommend finding a scanner that has a bed of extra tech inside of it so it can actually read manufacture specific codes. Also if you can get a hold of the factory service manuals for both that will help you a lot.
