I don't think anyone knows that yet.

The head unit was paused during that run.

I'll power off the head unit while accelerating and see if I can hear a difference.

I think the sound is still piped-in whether the head unit is on or off. There seems to be a module that does this apart from the Head unit. One of those microphone looking things is for the noise reduction and engine sounds

The system uses a microphone to help decide what tones to play for noise suppression and enriching exhaust noise if that microphone is unplugged the system stops working.
The microphone is located in the rear roofline, sit in the backseat and pull down the liner slightly to see it, in a convertible that microphone is located in the overhead map light assembly on the windshield.

The tune from Ford performance disables the active noise control system as well.

Is this confirmed in the Ranger?

I didn't think anyone had found it yet.

Confirmed in the Mustang. I'm pretty sure it's the same system in the Ranger. I don't think the radio being off stops at either because it has its own module that uses the speaker system "For the 2015 Mustang EcoBoost, Ford sound engineers and developers worked on an "Active Noise Control" system that amplifies the engine's purr through the car speakers. Afterwards, the automaker surveyed members of Mustang fan clubs on which processed "sound concepts" they most enjoyed.

My ears confirmed it in the Ranger. There's no way that little four-cylinder sounds like what I'm hearing inside the cab with the radio off Or on

I meant confirmed the location of the microphone so that it could be disabled.

I don't know if you even can completely turn off the head unit.

If I press the power button or press and hold the power button all I ever get is Audio Off.

There's a microphone right over your head and there's another one in the upper center console. One of them is used for noise reduction.

OK this is a keeper.

It passed the Wife test.

She immediately noticed it was quieter and actually said "That's not TOO bad", which constitutes high praise from her concerning a vehicle.
