I have a squeaking/grunting/chirping noise that comes from the back that happens while braking from 20mph down to 10mph and while reversing slightly uphill but not on level ground. at first it was only while braking and the rotor on the back had pits so easy fix. right? new rotors and the problem went away for a week. now it's back and the wonderful dealership can't get me in until middle of December. so any guesses?

I hope it's the center driveshaft bearing so I have an excuse to get a 1 piece driveshaft. I've been shaking every bearing spot I can and they are all tight except for the center bearing on the drive shaft(but we all know about that)

Another observation my thump at stopping and starting has gone away(ya that 1 with a TSB)

Guess it will be Savatage cranked to 11 until it gets fixed or something falls off

:whew: You're damper free so it's not that.

I hate trying to diagnose squeaks and rattles. It's seems you can never find them and of course when you bring it into the shop it stops.

Hi Dave,

Tough to diagnose when it is dynamic, ie 20 mph to 10 mph. Try standing on the rear bumper hanging on to the tailgate and rock the back of the vehicle to see if you can cause the noise or any noise for that matter. If it were the sticking slip yoke it might show doing such Shaking the center bearing side to side is not likely to result in any noise. I am wondering if changing the rotors had no effect but raising the rear of the vehicle caused some relative movement that minimized the noise. Need to cycle the shocks, slip yoke and spring eye bushings and the shackle brackets. I am wondering if this is related to the shocks...

best,
Phil

so a better explanation of the noise would be like a rail going around a bend with that screeching from the flanges rubbing the rail

Mr Schilke,
I feel the same about raising the back rear.

tried jumping on the bumpers, in the bed, hanging off the door, head stand on the roof and it doesn't make a sound going over bumps. the shocks on the back are almost new(june iirc)

I don't think it's shackle related or it would wail when I hit bumps or jump in the bed?

the only thing left is the slip yoke, rear diff, or @Danager said a loose bolt somewhere. then what in the rear diff would stop making noise after the rear end was lifted off the ground?

@Old NaCl huh? already have 1 and did that

Slip yoke being noisey would be a first for me....but maybe! More likely focus on the Diff.

always a first for everything.

At this point, I can't figure it out and everything I haven't checked(diff) is beyond my abilities/will so 29 more days until it can be taken in and hope they can find parts yay find parts game! my second favorite game next to NAME! THAT! NOISE!!! or my third favorite game "what will they say?" can it be... a) normal operating noise b) can't replicate it c) we need to do more testing followed by you are out of warranty and this will be expensive

I'll spray everything down with 303 junk and keep you all posted
