One of the many reason for the truck is our family like to mountain bike (my eldest son raced in the NICA series and now he is done I get a truck :) ) We will be carrying 5 bikes and was wondering what pads are people using and which ones to stay away.

Thank you

That looks very cool - a little more expensive then I was hoping to spend but will be showing it to the finance committee

Thank you

I just received my Demon tailgate pad today and threw it on before the sun went down.

Overall, it seems pretty solid. It's super lightweight which makes me question quality a little bit so we'll see how she holds up but the material itself seems pretty durable. The side making contact with the truck is a nice soft velvet-y type texture and seems like it'll keep the tailgate safe although I do have some concerns about potential sliding (of pad on tailgate). The straps should hold although they aren't as thick as I would imagine but I'm sure they'll work out fine. Bonus points for the extra pouches on the back-side and for the silver demon that matches the truck. One down-side is that it does cover your back-up camera but you can always floor it and hope the best right? I kid.

I'll check back in after I've actually used it - I plan to take 3 bikes for a 1.5 hr ride so that'll be a good test.

Anyways, here are some pics!

I like that - my son went down to our local goodwill and purchased an old quilt for $13 and we used that yesterday when we went out yesterday to ride. We had 5 bikes in the back and they all seemed to do fine on our short ride so I have a short term fix. While I look for the long term solution

Thank you all

Got the latchit rack in today.

Very nice fit and finish.

31" from front of bed to the rear 29r tire on a large megatower.

The width or thickness on these new tailgates is getting ridiculous making throwing your biker over the tailgate a pita especially the center of the tailgate. The Ranger isnt so bad but the full size trucks are bad.

So far so good with this rack. I do like that it locks into the tailgate. And its uber light weight.

Most of these pads shown have no coverage on the tailgate. The latchet rack seems super easy and nice which I like but the price is not. The open side tailgate is a bummer too.

finally took the bikes out today.
Super pleased with the tailgate pad. No movement from either bike although I did run a not-so-tight bungee from the frames to the front anchor handles. Cruisin at 85mph with no issues at all- I'll call it a win.

I'm very happy with my Yakima Gatekeeper. The padding is thick all around, and where the bike comes in contact with the pad on top of the tailgate, there are secondary paddings with velcro holding straps sewn to them - all look durable and well-designed, with no movement of the bikes that I can detect. The flap that protects the tailgate paint is of a high-quality felt on the inside, and of a nice smooth material on the outside.

I've carried three mountain bikes on it so far, with no issues; there are a total of five straps, and I don't doubt that five bikes can easily be accommodated.

An independent flap can be folded part-way up to reveal the Ford badge and camera (seen in my photo), or completely tucked up and away into the top part of the pad.

I ordered the pad from Backcountry.com, and the price was $147.20, plus tax; shipping was free.
