Tired of buying bike rack components so I made my own. This will be my 5th vehicle since owning/riding/transporting bikes and am tired of paying for new rack systems (paid almost $1000 for my last Thule roof rack on my Crosstrek). I saw the Rocky Mountain set up and realized they are just utilizing the bed tie down spots at the back of the bed. Difference being their mounts push the forks further back towards the tailgate causing the loss of space for larger bikes while mine keeps the mounts towards the front and keeps the room with a closed tailgate. My roadie is a 56cm with about 5" left between the rear tire and the closed tailgate and my 29" mountain bike has about 2" free space.
Being in the business I am in I can pretty much add anything to this setup, sure it does not have fancy sliding doodads but I challenge a thief to get anything off this setup quickly..lol. They would need quite a few different tools.
Had a piece of 14ga racking scrap out in the yard so I cut it down to add some end plates to it. Then only needed to fab up the fork mount blocks and I was good to go!
The original plan was to have the fork block facing the tailgate but then I realized I could get more room by facing them towards the sky.
Wonder if I should patent this.
