MPG gain in sport vs. Its inherent extra wear on components

One point not mentioned in this Lugging discussion.
Is boreXstroke.
Generally speaking, an over square engine needs more RPM in its "power curve" than an under square engine.
Previous Ford 2.3L engines (I.E. HSC and LIMA) were over square.
The 2.3L EcoBoost is under square, resulting in higher piston speeds compared to a comparable displacement over square engine, so it would naturally develop more power at lower RPM
and so tolerate more "lugging".

Now, I know that these are generalities and are both incremental and general in nature.
I also am aware that "Generalities are always false" ,
but it does certainly mitigate any absolutes.

You must not drive like I do. LOL. Driving conservative in D with cruise at 65 my best on the HWY is 20-21.2. Normal driving like a bat outa hell I get 17ish. I do have a very aggressive 93 tune though.

There ought to be a dedicated font for it, but like a joke,
sarcasm isn't much good if you have to explain it.

Still... maybe Italics or underlining could be used to dispel any ambiguity!

If this has already been discussed I apologize.

Been reading quite a few people on here say they drive around in sport mode for the sole purpose of getting more MPG.. which is great. I don't think anyone would turn down more efficiency with all things remaining equal.

However, my quick test/observation on my way home has me questioning just how big of a favor these people are doing for themselves.

On a flat stretch of road going 45mph in drive.. my motor was spinning right around 1500 rpm. All things equal but put into SPORT my rpm jumped and stayed at about 2500 rpm. I'm too lazy to do the exact math but that's nearly a 75% increase in rpm for the same speed.

This (more or less) means that if I drove my truck exactly like that for 100k miles, the motor would have done roughly the equivalent of 175k miles worth of spinning compared to if I had just used regular old drive.




Does the meager amount of additional efficiency offset the much larger increase in "work" the motor has to do? Personally, I don't think so.

Spot on. Anyone claiming they use Sport mode strictly for better fuel economy is completely out to lunch.

The whole point of Sport mode in most vehicles is to hold lower gears longer, sharpen the throttle response, and keep the engine sitting right in the powerband—which naturally pushes revs way higher. Burning through 60-75% more RPMs to maintain the exact same cruising speed is the absolute opposite of saving fuel; you're just adding a ton of unnecessary wear and tear on the valvetrain and burning extra dead dinosaurs for a slightly snappier throttle feel.

I'll put my 2 cents in fwiw. I stay in D 95 ish percent of the time and only put it in S if I'm passing a slow mover on a two lane blacktop or the highway and need the extra ponies. S is also good for just blowing the soot out of them.

I assume you mean soot? I remember when my grandpa died and my Dad and I went to drive his '72 Impala home. He full throttled it once or twice. I asked why and he said since it's been sitting so long he was trying blow the soot out.
