Last weekend I had the opportunity to install the @Mishimoto / Borne Off-road Snorkel for the 2019+ Ford Ranger. I purchased this kit from Mishimoto via Ebay.
The good:
• Aesthetics. This snorkel looks better than the ARB Safari Snorkel(personal opinion). The main portion comes down and enters where the Ranger badge is on the fender with the plumbing running inside the fender.
• Price. The Mishimoto/Borne kit can be had for nearly $150 less than the ARB Safari kit.
• Quality. Removing the kit from the box I was surprised to find how well the entire kit was put together. Everything was securely wrapped and put in their own sealed bags. Even the paper template for drilling the hole in the inner fender and exterior rivet hole were not some cheap copy paper as I would’ve expected.
• Reversal. Other than having to purchase a new lower airbox, it is relatively simple to go back to stock without any worry since you won’t be drilling any large holes in the exterior of the truck.
• Sound. Oh boy the sound. With the radio off you can hear a rush of air through harder than normal acceleration. With the window down the sound is even more pronounced and you can even hear the stock BOV put in work off throttle. All this through the stock airbox and stock style paper filter.
The bad:
Instructions. The kit does not come with instructions and you’re expected to download/print them off their website. And the instructions themselves could be made easier to understand.
• Install. They do rate the install 4 out of 5 on their install video. While overall the kit in its entirety was not overly difficult, there were a few spots where I kept fighting with the same motion. Such as riveting the the mounting plate inside the fender, and screwing the main portion to said mounting plate.
Where I would improve this kit is with the instructions. While Mishimoto does have a video on YouTube detailing the install, I feel like a fresher/newer video based off the paper instructions should be done. The paper instructions shouldinclude a list of the tools you will need(video does show this in the beginning), and also a list of all the items in the kit with their appropriate Mishimoto part number. Some of the smaller items came in bags with no associated part numbers unlike the larger items which had their Mishimoto part number outside of the bag on a sticker.
Overall this is a well put together kit. I have received numerous comments from car and non-car people about how good it looks. And as I stated earlier it sounds good too. I can not comment if the install has brought on any other unusual noises or whistling since I do have a rack and rooftop tent that already do occasionally whistle at highway speeds.
I have no regrets with my purchase and think it was a great buy. I wish I would’ve had it a month ago when I did my trip to North Georgia and attempted some deeper than expected creek crossings.
I have added some pictures I took during the install. While they may not be uploaded in the order I took them, if you have any questions I’ll gladly try to answer them.
