Hey all,

Trying to figure out if an 18" RCI Rack can be used to haul a kayak when the tent isn't on. I've measured and I feel like it'd be fine (get about 19" from bed rails to the top of the cab"). I'm guessing it'd be fine to use the cross beams on the rack to secure the kayak.

Thanks!

It shouldn't be a problem. I want to say that when I measured it, it was 20'' from the rail to the cab. If you have an 18'' rack, you then have your kayak mount on top of that, which should be fine. I know I've used my overhaul at the lowest setting (18'') without concern.

That's kinda what I figured. There's added height with all the mounting hardware. I really want to get an single solution for RTT and cargo (like a kayak).

Thanks!

Are you sure mounting hardware will give you extra 3"-4" hight? I just don't want kayak to lay on the roof or hit it when bouncing.

yeah same, was thinking if I don't get the height then I can use some of those foam blocks you see some people use for roof mounting. Maybe trim them down to fit under so theres no banging

I have retractable tonneau cover. it may work if it works with retractable.
Looks like it does. I may just go with those anyway since I plan on getting a cover later

Yes you need about 2 more inches for a long object to clear the apex point of the Ranger roof using an RCI 18" rack. That is the only reason my platform rack has a subframe between it and my RCI rack was clearance. I just couldn't bring myself to spend $150 (or whatever it was) for the tonneau brackets when some aluminum square bar and industrial rubber spacers would do the same thing for sub $40 bucks.

I guess it comes down to what type of hardware you're using. If you're going with a stacker and foam block, then maybe only 1-2'' from it - but then the kayaks are on the side, and should dramatically curve up by the time it gets to the cab. If you go with a J hook or a rear roller, I would expect at least 2 inches - but measure what your specific one is to see how much lift it gives.

Yeah any kind of mount for a kayak should give an inch or two instead of just laying it flat on the rack. But again the adapters raise it up a bit too or you can go the route that Jack mentioned and build your own “risers”
