You were lucky you had sliced bread.
We would go to A&P every Friday night when the bread was marked down to 10 cents a loaf and get 10 loaves for the week. I grew up on day old bread from the freezer and the best part was when mom made French toast ?.

My Uncle was head butcher at the A&P in Marlboro Massachusetts, that’s when they had whole swinging beef …

My mom got a complete 12 place setting with accessories of Currier and Ives dishes free for shopping at A&P. Every friday night she would get a free plate for buying day old bread and my favorite Spanish Bar Cakes. Took over a year to get the whole set. My sister has it and supposedly it's valuable now.

My mom would go to the little local bakery once a week and buy the two- and three-day old pastries. I was shocked when I tasted a fresh pastry. She would freeze those stale things and then when she thawed them out, they were like a rock. This was before microwaves. Sometimes the dog wouldn't even eat them.

My mom would put butter on the bread before making sandwiches so we wouldn't choke on it. Remember the first time I got a sandwich made with fresh Wonder Bread and a chunk of it stuck to the top of my mouth. That was a whole new experience eating bread that didn't crumble apart and stuck like glue.

That's how my wife got our "good china" before we got married. You'd get a place setting (plate, cup and saucer) for buying so much and You'd clip the weekly coupon for the serving piece. I think that's where our silverware came from too.

I also remember my folks going to the filling (gas) station that gave premiums for getting a fill up. They had a glass case between the pumps and you could pick a glass or coffee cup for filling up. The only coffee cups we had were those green "Fireking" ones.

Oh, the memories.

S & H Green Stamps were popular up through the 70s. Many stores, gas stations and supermarkets would carry them. You would get a number of stamps based on the amount of your purchase and paste in your Saver Book. when your book(s) was full you could redeem it/them for merhcandise, like steak knives can openers, clock radios etc. If you bought a cartload of groceries, you'd get a couple of pages, and use a wet sponge to activate the glue; the sponge was a premium item, too!

I remember these as a kid too. My mom would get books of these from the grocery store (Stop & Shop) and paste the stamps inside the booklets. I remember he bought some ugly green canister set with some of them but that was the style/color back then. lol
