I remember reading that in middle age Europe the maximum work effort what a Lords of the Manor could task to serfs was 30%, and as Sundays were church days this comes to 24*6*0,3.. which is pretty much 43,2hours per week or 7 hours a day. Later generations adopted the maximum standard for their slav.. er.. workers.
Yeah, but at the start of the industrial revolution, it was common for people to work 80-90 hours per week.
