If/when the hood struts on my truck start showing signs of failing… I’ll immediately order new hood struts!

Pretty sure I originally ordered the struts before I even had my truck. Prop rod? Yea, no thanks.

I was always working on my older cars so the struts/springs were nice to have. Now I only open the hood to check the oil and change the air filter so the prop rod works for my needs. Even though I love dampers I'm still not buying them. lol

I've heard the Redline struts are supposed to be good ones.

If I were a tech or the owner of a shop, I’d be more than happy to make the inspection of hood struts the first item on the list for every vehicle that came in - more billable time and margin on the parts.

There’s really nothing to inspect, they’re a sealed unit. Just like a damper all you have to do is look to see if there’s any oil from a failing seal. Ot the obvious the hood slams down once you open it. lol

I guess there are shops/owners out there that would screw their customers over and bill them for an hours time for something that only takes 30 seconds to inspect.

Most people reject them. Been thru that too many times.

I have actually had customers tell me that I had replaced them a year before and they weren't buying them again. Many put cutoff broom handles in their trunk to use as a hood prop. I used to have a little clamp I bought off the tool truck just to clamp the dead struts to hold the hood up. Had a red flag that hung off of it so you wouldn't forget to take it out and bend a hood.

Well, fingers crossed that I never need the broom stick or the clamps.

Although, I do miss having a shop towel neatly folded and secured under the prop rod and knowing it would always be there when I needed it.

Like the $80-$100 charge just about everyone does for replacing the cabin air filter? That one just frosts me.....

Annie gets free oil changes from the Honda dealer. Her daughter brought the car in last weekend and of course they gave her a list of things that should be replaced asap. This is how they get some people for the "free" oil change. Luckily she called me before doing any of this and I told her not to do it.

Wipers - $109.00
Cabin filter - $75.00
Air Filter - $115.00

🤦‍♂️

Crooked as a coat hanger. Some places offer free wipers with an oil change for crying out loud.

But I would remove tailgate dampers for free so it all balances out in the end.
