remove the speed limiter then. Weirdness goes away. I never have one. Removed them all just in case.

...and get H rated tires. I can share that the truck can 'comfortably' hit 120 with room to spare though I don't like the aerodynamics above that.

Who cares how long he did it? 90 is nothing for these trucks. It's unrelated. His trans was overfilled and overheating.

Based on having once lived in PA and having to use "America's 1st superhighway" I'd say your chances of being ticketed are exponentially greater than being tailgates. State police everywhere on that outdated pos perpetually under construction roadway.

I take I-81 annually and see PA's Finest all the time. Hard to speed too much due to truck traffic.

I refuse to take I-83 due to constant construction and no shoulders with trucks everywhere. So it is I-270 out of DC to US 15 at Frederick to Harrisburg, then I-81. Wave at Camp David on the way.

Not so bad. Except DC. I go around it on the loop in the wee early morning hours. I typically run 70-75mph (5 over, not a mph faster). "5 you're fine. 9 you're mine!" Right from a NCSHP's mouth! And If I light you up you will be ticketed"

so going 90 on the open highway in a 5g is not a transmission killer. ive set my cruise at 85 for many miles across texas and the truck was not straining or getting hot. including in the heat of the summer. I even have E rated tires that people often act like will just simply destroy a ranger due to them being so crazy heavy lol. once your up to that speed it just stays in 10th gear unless your climbing or mash the skinny pedal. still well under 3k rpms too. does use more fuel than 65 of course lol. (no im not a wacko driver, my state has many areas where 75 -85 are the posted speed.)

In all seriousness though, the trans always seems to act super weird after touching the speed limiter.

It's not the Trans, it's the motor being down throttled by the ECU limit, little Forscan work you can remove it just be cognizant of what your tires are rated for if you're going to a track or something to push the limits

It is a truck after all ? but dammit if it's pickup day at the dragstrip or something and you want to play with your Ford F'n Ranger you should be able to as God intended without having the computer kick you in the nuts at 100mph because 'MuH eMiSsUhNz'

90 mph is nothing significant for the drivetrain. A little dangerous to travel in traffic at that speed, but no problem for the truck. However, 90 mph in 4th gear could be a big problem. I'm curious to see what RPM the truck hit before OP shut it down.

Well, Florida everyone goes 90-100 on the highways at all times.

It held over 8,000RPM for 10 seconds or so until I was able to pull over. I tried dropping it into neutral but didn't want to shift there either. The stick moved but the actual gear nor dash light didn't go to neutral.

Have you fired it up since then? I'd be surprised if there isn't some engine knock as well. Strong potential to blow a piston ring or something at that speed.

After the issue I let it sit for 30 minutes on the side of the highway. It was said to me that the trans pan was overfilled. When it heated up it started spilling out fluid out of the top. However that doesn't explain the gear change. Maybe something to do with hitting the governor and an electronic glitch.

Taking to ford wednesday to diagnose what the hell happened. Ran perfectly fine after the issue...

I guess perhaps I am partially misunderstood with my post. Let me attempt to clarify...

I am sure the Ranger engine and drivetrain are, as a rule, robust enough to handle that amount of speed for extended periods of time (but as any reader of this forum can easily tell, there will be the exceptions to that statement).

I personally would fear traveling in my Ranger at those speeds for any particular amount of time because while my truck will certainly DO it, it wasn't engineered and built for that particular type of use, as I understand things, and as many readers/contributors here have astutely pointed out, it is a truck and is best suited to do truck stuff. I would feel unsafe in traffic ( or out of it) at those high speeds.
