The autocross crowd calls that "chunking." It's something you might see when applying a lot of lateral G-force to the tread. IMO, airing down might have contributed to it.

I have a good tire shop that has installed a lot of Hankook AT tires. I'm sure they'd tell you they aren't designed for serious off-roading. If you're at the point where you're airing down, you want a more dedicated tire. IMO.
Agreed. Airing down is largely unnecessary for "light off roading". I never air down and I never chunked up the ATM like that. 38 psi cold and send it!

We don't have any Discount Tire locations in the area :frown:. I was thinking Ford would warranty it being undamaged and low mileage but they don't care about tires.
New vehicles I've bought come with a tire warranty booklet - IIRC my Ranger had one for the Hankooks and Bridgestones, mine had Hankooks, thankfully. The tire warranty is thru the tire mfg, any damage to a sidewall is difficult to pursue a claim, I've pursued premature treadwear in the past with Discount Tire and they made me happy, applying a credit against new tire purchase. I once had a sidewall bulge on a Continental Tire that came from driving a SUV on a dirt road that was in good shape, can't recall hitting any good sized potholes, ended up putting on Michelin Defender LT - much of the higher rating comes from more robust sidewall construction, so on my Ranger putting on Wildpeaks with an XL rating. And yes as you discovered Ford could care less about your tire issue - unless you are buying a replacement from them. But were it me, I would have contacted Hankook to see if they might at least inspect the tire for a sidewall defect.

new cars come with a tire warranty from the tire manufacturer, not the automaker. The warranty is separate from the vehicle's basic warranty, which is also known as the bumper-to-bumper warranty. The tire warranty protects against premature wear and manufacturing defects, but it doesn't cover normal wear, road hazards, or issues caused by the car's mechanical failure.

The warranty is outlined in a booklet .

The Hankook ATMs are so soft on the side, I doubt they will handle being aired down well. I am also with YaBoiNewton that airing down in unnecessary and probably contributed to the tire damage.

I have Cooper Discoverer Road+Trail A/Ts in XL load and have been very happy. They tow well, are stable and firm on road and do great on light off-roading (gravel forest roads). All the other mentioned tires above are good too.

I was looking a few weeks back on Tire Rack and Discount Tire for Hankook replacements, Cooper was high on my list until I came across the Falken Wildpeak AT/3 on a close out, a concern is the mileage rating - 55k , improved to 65k on the AT/4 . The Hankook Dynapro seem reasonably priced for what they are - IMO a decent all purpose tire, stiffer sidewalls typically translate into a rougher ride, also was surprised how many tire choices there are in 265/60 18" size. Right now I'm riding on marginal Hankooks , one had a nail and I plugged it myself whilst another had a 3/8" bolt embedded that discount tire plugged and patched but I was driving on moderate dirt roads this past weekend around Telluride and Ophir and found myself worrying about a tire giving it up.

I've had the Wildpeak AT4 since January. Very happy with them. Very good in all conditions. Quiet and nice ride. I went with 255/55/18 from Discount Tire.

good to hear they are quiet - is the size you selected different from oem - mine came with the 265/60 /18.

I had the same oem size. Just wanted a little taller tire.
