We had a bad hail storm a few weeks ago here in Maryland. I thought Lil Blue came out unscathed, but i notice a ding in the hood as I walked to the mailbox a few days ago. So i got the contact of a good PDR (paintless dent removal) tech to come out today. He looked it over and found 4 more dents i didn't see until he pointed them out, 2 on the hood, 3 on the drivers side fender, total. I took the initiative while he went to get his tools, to take off the hood insulation and was going to take off the fender wheel well liner too. well some of those lil screws in the plastic things would just spin and spin... and one of the heads on them was stripped out. So, i need a new screw for one of them, and how are these lil buggers supposed to come out when they just spin and spin? anyway, $280 later my ranger is dent free, and i need a new screw. i guess i'll get one from the dealer parts dept as the shipping on something like that is stupid.

This post caught my eye. Ford seems to use the re-useable fasteners that you've described (with the phillips insert) quite a bit. In recent years I had a few late model Mustangs which also had those type of fasteners in the wheel wells. The way they work is you are supposed to remove them with a standard Phillips screwdriver. When you re-insert them you place them in their hole and then push in the phillips portion (like pushing in an insert) and that locks the fastener in position. Then you can remove and replace as needed. However, when I went to a dealership to find some replacements (for ones that I damaged before I figured out how they functioned) I came up empty. Apparently Ford does not resell these supplied fasteners for Service. Can't say that I understand why because they work so well and can be reused many times as opposed to standard Xmas tree fasteners.

With many minor parts, the most difficult problem in sourcing them is figuring out the actual name of the part. Ford seems to refer to the plastic trim retainers as "rivets". If you search for them that way, you'll likely find the OE Ford part. Alternately, a simple internet search for trim "ford ranger trim clip retainer rivet" will keep you reading for a while.

You can hire anyone you want. Maybe get a couple of quotes. $280 sounds pretty high for 5 small, easy to reach dents.
Having a good PDR person is essential. A good one is truly a miracle worker.

the program i got through my ford dealer, i called a claim center, they assigned who would take care of the dent on the door. the ford program didnt cover the hail dents, but my insurance did.
