for those that live in a free ish state, do you ever keep a long gun in the truck?? i dont but ive been debating it. on my days off im normally in the middle of no place alone and would like a bit of extra protection just in case dirt bags came along or even an angry critter. some of the hogs we have in texas are pretty mean and get big. not to mention i cant out run them lol.
Not all the time but it all depends where I'm going. If I'm going to an unfamiliar area or traveling out of state where my CCW is reciprocal I'll take my Mossberg Shockwave. It's easy to conceal in the truck and fits in a duffle bag.

I have a full size 9mm, a S&W M&P with 5 inch barrel, but had been thinking about getting a "micro 9mm".
My carry for over 20 years was a 4 inch Kimber 1911. In 2016 I bought 3 Shields, 9mm, 40 (ported PC model) and .45. I gave the 9mm to my daughter and the .45 Shield has been my carry for the last 6 years.

I had an opportunity to get a Springfield Hellcat. A friend has one and I've shot it some in the past.
It was a bit snappy at first but after a few boxes it has settled in nicely and man is it accurate.
I added a TRL-6 light/laser and a Hogue Handall sleeve.
The U-notch sights are very quick but the white outline around the back "U" is a bit distracting so I blacked it out.

Last week at my shooting spot I ran the Hellcat against my 4 inch Model 66 .357.
The .357 has a DA trigger pull of 8 lbs. so is a couple heavier than the HC. Loads are mid range, a 158 plated flat nose at 1060 fps. so not much muzzle rise.
I shot 6 shots from each rapid fire at silhouette targets set at 20 yards.

The shots from the little 9mm were clustered tight center mass, while I had some wild shots with the revolver. I did the test twice more with the same results.
Much easier, for me anyway, to shoot fast and accurately with the little 9mm.
I'd still prefer the .357 when up in the mountains though.

The flush fit mag with the pinky rest is an 11 round, and the one with extended FDE base is 13 round. There are now 15 and 17 round magazines for the Hellcat but they stuck down too far for my tastes.

I rarely travel without a rifle and a pistol. I use a console vault to secure my sidearm if I have to go in some place that does not allow me to carry. I would not keep a long gun in a Ranger without some system to secure it tho. So far, I use a decked system in the bed (locking) with a Diamondback HD locking bed cover that is one of the harder to break into covers available and overkill for a Ranger.

Considering the meth related issues in the rural areas now, I feel more secure in the city with only a sidearm than I do while checking cattle. As an added bonus, if heading out by the farms, I can take TWO rifles in the decked system, one with thermal for shooting coyotes at night. ?

I'd build a 9mm Carbine! Or "pistol". LOL

I had been carrying (when I have time to not be at work) a Glock, but found I didn't like it all that much and have since given it to my son. I have also been wondering about downsizing a bit on what I carry in the future and have been eyeballing (in print) the micro-9's and possibly something that is a little bigger but not as big as the Glock was. I have recently been drooling a bit over the Springfield Ronin EMP...they have a 3" and 4" barrel version, and I wonder how well they'd fit my apparently smallish hands and how it would feel to shoot anything resembling a 1911 model. Someday when I grow up I'd like to own a nice 1911...just because.

All that said, I don't know anyone that's said they had a Hellcat that didn't like it a lot. I'm jealous, of course :)

very sharp rig! i like the idea but would not bring it along. i know it is legally a pistol but i have that fear of the cop that sees short barrel rifle and tosses me in cuffs. or if i had to use it defensively we know folks have been indoctrinated to see anything that looks like that as an "assault" machine gun etc. so even though i could i wouldnt. shame to have to think of it all that way. but stupidity is infectious.

I have a Sig P938 which is a 3" barrel 9mm with a 7 round mag. It's like a mini 1911 with the safety, slide lock an hammer. It has a half cock too like a full 1911. I like to chamber a round an lower the hammer for carry.

Chris, I have small hands too and Glocks never felt right for me. My two carry guns are my S&W M&P Shield 9mm and my Sig 365 XL. Both have slim grips and fit in my hand perfect. I also have a Springfield Armory 1911 EMP in 9mm with a 3" barrel. This (and all my 1911's) are really great guns and they have a nice slim grip and very comfortable to carry. You should check one out but be warned, 1911's are addictive and they always seem to follow me home.

That's the magnet mount I have in my Ranger. I haven't put one in the Jeep yet but this reminds me I need to order another.

I thought you had it mounted on the center console in the Ranger is why I asked. Nice weapon, brother.
Someday, when I grow up... ?

Thx Chris! There were a few others who mounted theirs on the side of the center console. I'm to short so my seat if farther forward and I couldn't get a good spot there to mount it.

i feel like these days id never have a chance at winning. not that im any more pessimistic than normal lol but i have zero faith in the govt or legal system anymore. law and truth seem to have a back seat to media and labels. id love to bring a carbine or something based on an ar or ak with me. just feel like id be the one that gets hosed for it.

I'd love to have a pistol caliber carbine to plink with, it would be fun. But a person can do much better for a truck gun.
Yes, the longer barrel of a carbine gives a 9mm more velocity and accuracy, but it is still just a weak pistol cartridge, in a package that is nearly as long and heavy as one that shoots a real rifle cartridge.

Something like an AK or Mini-30 chambered in 7.62 x 39 will give you 2-3 times the range of a 9mm pistol carbine, 4 to 5 times the power and way better penetration.
If whomever was shooting at you was hiding behind vehicle or wall, good luck getting through with a carbine firing a pistol cartridge. The 7.62 x 39 will cut through a car like butter.

A carbine in .308 would give you even greater range power and penetration but at the expense of a heavier gun with slower follow up shots.
5.56mm would also be much better than a pistol round but not as effective getting through windshields and car metal as the .30 caliber rounds.

While bailing out of the truck with a 9mm carbine is better than having only a handgun, don't handicap yourself.
If you are going to keep a 5-8 lb. yard long carbine in your rig, it might as well be a rifle caliber.

And if you want to secure the long gun so it won't disappear, there are a few options.
Some of these need an optional electronic switch $40), some come with it, but they are all reasonably priced. If your vehicle battery were to fail, these can all be opened with a key.
