This should've never made it into the Pacific Ocean and taken out well before hitting land! Looks like we didn't learn anything from 911! ?:lipssealed::facepalm:
We can only hope they are not some plague delivery system. One raining down on Montana, the other sprinkling across the entire US, yet another coming up from south of the border. And the gov that is supposed to protect us letting it happen.

It just passed near me a few minutes ago. The local sheriffs have been posting not to try and shoot at it lol. Everyone that has 50 cal is probably thinking you’ll never hit it if you don’t shoot at it lol.

Hindsight being 20/20 I should have went fishing today. Could have had a front row seat to the crazy lol. Imagine a couple dudes out fishing a reef and all of this going down near you lol! I imagine Coast Guard would be going crazy on CH 16 saying leave the area.

yall know i avoid watching the news. i knew nothing of this balloon thing until seeing all the comments around r5g about it. at first i though it was all jokes relating to daves ballons in his backyard post...
every instinct i have says this is bad. the world is being spoon fed this narrative about spying and its humor viral online with memes and jokes to mislead from the real threat. things to think on 1. china is full blown communist, they have no civilian anything. 2. china has technology beyond our own - if they wanted to spy - a balloon would be joke. Same with weather study. this is 2023 middle school kids make weather balloons and rockets in science class do we really think the worlds richest and most prolific manufacturing nation is using balloons to spy. is a chink with binoculars a note pad and barometer on board... no. 3. balloons have been used in warfare for hundreds of years as means of weapon delivery . a list of all sorts of care packages could be on the balloons including biological, chemical and other dirty weapons. Next COVID release of stronger mutation maybe. 4. if this was weather study how come NOAA, FAA, or other appropriate weather related groups had no knowledge in the states or other nations. weather balloons are a thing. when they are launched the world community often shares the info, tracking and data. they also notify authorities of it. 5. ok say it is totally "innocent" and just a balloon. works as good cover to test our response and resolve huh. no i dont trust china. no i dont trust our govt either. i do admit that i hope im totally wrong 100% and some china college kids los trak of da bawoons. tin foil hat me. i wonder if two more will pop up some place...

sadly it seems borders and air space are no longer a thing the usa secures. used to be sort of a priority. but im old... id say why and by who we have open air space and no border protection but i get by with enough stuff i shouldnt post around the r5g already. dave lets my occasional cunnilingus joke or inference slide so i will try not to throw out any political names or offices lol.

OK, I'll post a few. I have a bunch more, but this is a start.

First: 1853 Enfield Rifle - Confederate used. Also have a Union 1842 Springfield.

Next is a Winchester 1917, first month of production for WWI:

Next up is a 1943 M1 Garand. According to Patton, the greatest battlefield implement ever devised.

Next is a Saginaw (GM Motors Division) 1943 M1 Carbine.

Last for now is a 1943 Remington M1903A3

That Garand pic got edited weird, so here's a pic of the Garand and the 1917 together.

I just got back from a trip and find all these comments on the Chinese Balloons. I was stationed at NORAD Cheyenne Mountain Complex (Think eyes and ears of the North American Continent) and later at a Strategic AIr Command Eastern US command center bunker (Think ICBMs, and Nuke Bombers). Both installations required Top Secret SBI clearance and "Need to Know" Authorization. I worked and maintained the Briefing Equipment for the daily General Staff Briefings.

Without giving away anything vital, I can tell when I was in the USAF, nothing approached the North American continent undetected. We constantly scrambled Fighter aircraft to escort Russian reconnaissance aircraft flying down both US coasts. Over the horizon radar systems, satellites, and other technologies made the possibility of anything approaching undetected from the east , west, or north an almost certain impossibility. Historically, approaching from the south was problematic. This info is from circa 1976-1981. I imagine things have gotten a great deal more robust. Back then we could see and track an object the size of a basketball 20,000 miles out in space. We could read news print on the ground from satellites. The image below is the active coverage from around 1987. The southern risk exposure had been corrected by this time.

IMHO, there is no way the US did not know these things were coming.

More concerning to me is that they let it fly right over all three of our land based ICBM gardens as well Offutt AFB, and Fort Bragg, NC the largest Military installation in the US and home of the 82nd Airborne Division.

Of course the Chinese may already have high res spy satellites capable of seeing the same thing.

Stating it wasn't safe to shoot the balloons down is poppycock. Montana, SD, and ND have extremely low density areas. I suspect they waited until it cleared land before firing to keep people from discovering what the payload was. Difficult for civilians to pick up the pieces when it is scattered across 40+ miles in the Atlantic Ocean floor.

I believe the US government allowed the passage, and knew exactly what the payload is/was.

For what reason? I have no idea.

I simply know that in 1976-1981, the tech existed to spot anything approaching the continent borders well before it arrived. This included anything that flies and sails, including submarines.

IMO, The US government knows what is going on. They are simply choosing not to tell the population. They did put on quite a show after the fact off the SC coast..
