Another week another recall. It sounds like the problem with this one is the installer (s) because it's traced to a steering gear assembly tool that was improperly adjusted. While it's a small amount compared to the amount built, it's still a very dangerous mess up. Plant QC definitely seems to be lacking now.

Ford's new Bronco is the subject of yet another recall. This time around, the impacted population is rather small — even relative to the number of Broncos Ford has been able to deliver so far. Just 343 examples will have to visit the dealer, all of them 2022 and 2023 Wildtrak and Raptor models. Ford traced the problem to a steering gear assembly tool that was improperly adjusted and damaged some ball nut retainers during the production process. The damage can cause interference in the steering gear operation, and binding forces can cause the steering to lock up completely.

"A broken steering gear ball nut retainer can allow balls in the ball nut assembly to displace and wedge," Ford's defect report to NHTSA said. "Continued steering wheel movement can further wedge the balls and displace the retainer, resulting in increased steering effort. Should this continue and the balls do not transition back into the return guides, the ball nut may not be able to rotate. As a consequence, the driver may not be able to rotate the steering wheel while driving, increasing the risk of a crash."

I had the same problem with a new 1989 heavy duty 2500 Chevy. The steering would randomly lock up in turns putting me in the ditch. Chevy had the truck for 3 months the first year trying to fix it with no loaner vehicle. It got worse and was scary when I was towing our camper behind it. I asked Chevy for a replacement truck and they said no, we will eventually figure it out. Filed lemon law paperwork and the day the court date was set I got a call from the area manager that they would meet me at the dealer with a check for the full price of the truck including additions I had added. I actually got the rebate I didn't pay back. They were going to dissasmble it and try to figure out the problem after pretty much everything in the front end had been replaced or modified.
3 months later I got a call one night from someone wondering why I got rid of the truck at low mileage. He was having the same problem with his and Chevy wanted to trade him my old truck instead of buying his back. He found my name and address on the owners manual cover and decided to see if it was a good vehicle. Looks like they bought it back before it was stamped lemon so they could pass it on to someone else with no history of problems. After our talk he also went after the lemon law for his.
I bought my first new Ford truck of 5 after that. Tried a Chevy in 2018 but the frame rotted out in less then 2 years so back to Ford now.
