Well, I went out to move the Ranger today and one of my flip out keys would not start the truck. The truck turns on but won’t start. The dash displays no key detected.

background info:

I bought the 2020 Ranger XLT FX4 two months ago brand new.
It is not push button start.
The fob that won’t start the truck will lock and unlock the truck.
When I put the key that works in the ignition and turn the truck on but not start, I can see under settings that two keys are programmed as admin keys.
I pulled the battery on the bad key fob and measured the battery at 3.07 vdc.
The good key fob battery measured at 3.05 vdc.

I looked in the manual, no way to add a key or delete and add a key. No backup way to start the truck, WTF?

I will take it to the dealership tomorrow to get it fixed as it is under warranty. I will update tomorrow.

Well scratch that...I forgot I had to work today so Monday I bring it in.

Well after a trip to the dealer on Monday and a second trip yesterday due to their key machine being down, I got my key replaced. Something in the keys electronics went faulty.

Hmmm. I remember seeing some kind of "chip" in old keys that had to align with internals in the column but these don't have that. Is the key wired to to electronics in the FOB?

I don’t think so. The key is one solid metal piece with no separate contact points. I had the good key in the truck with me when I tried using the bad key but the truck still would not start. So I think the actual key maybe at most an “antenna” for a very low powered signal from the key fob.

Reviving this. I saw this last weekend once after I was looking at some forscan settings. The key fob unlocked and locked just fine but turning it gave me "no key detected". I got out of the truck, locked it and then unlocked it and it started fine.

Today, in the drive thru carwash I turned the truck off and when the wash finished the same thing happened. I had to lock and unlock the doors a couple of time with it while sitting inside for it to work.

I read another topic about a Ranger with push button start and it looks like RF interference could be an issue. I then remember that I had just installed a Qi wireless charger that's connected to the AC/Heater vent right next to the steering wheel. So I went out this evening, tried to start it w/o my phone in the holder, turned the truck off and put my phone back, tried to turn the truck on and got the same thing so I took my phone out and the truck started.

TL;DR, I think Qi wireless charger too close to the ignition can cause this issue. Hope the might help someone else as it's a pretty jarring thing to have happen when you have a line of people behind you and the driers are blowing waiting for you to move up and use them. :)
