Essentially, you can’t make cars without aluminum. You can’t work with aluminum without using magnesium. And as of December, you may not be able to work with magnesium much — if at all. Amos Fletcher, analyst for Barclays, put it succinctly: “If magnesium supply stops, the entire auto industry will potentially be forced to stop.”

China has been in the midst of an energy crisis recently, with factories shutting down to conserve power. Unfortunately for the car industry, China is also the world’s primary supplier of magnesium — 85% of the world’s supply comes from the country.

The most prevalent magnesium-producing town in China, Yulin, just ordered 35 of its 50 production facilities to shut down. The remaining 15 have been told to scale back operations by half, leaving production drastically reduced.

Recycling will pick back up again. Every single day Americans throw away enough soda cans to build a full sized commercial jet plane. The beer cans would build 3 a day! ?
Unless the numbers have changed last I heard only about 10% of the recycle material that is picked up in the US actually gets recycled. I still separate my clean plastics from regular trash to put it out I doubt much gets recycled. I set my cans aside an when I get a decent amount I catch one of the "scrapers" going though grabbing metal to recycle an give them to them. I'd love to see us get away from doing so much business with China. We are funding them replacing us as the lead superpower.

It’s really working out well that we all Rely on one country so much for our raw materials , products etc.

We have the ability to recycle quite a bit!

I know that here in Texas there is a facility that can recycle and produce magnets...most of the rare earth magnets are manufactured in China. This company came up with a process that cleans up the ore from the scrap and can make new magnets from it.

Magnesium and processed aluminum are easy peasy compared to that.

Where I live we have a plant that burns trash to produce electric, so does that mean anything I send there is recycled?
