Decided to clean up the fender vents today and finish them in gloss black vinyl to go along with my black and red emblem and trim treatment.

After removing the XLT badges, I sanded the lettering flush with the outer portion of the badge insert. Filled the remaining voids with epoxy bumper repair material and sanded the surfaces flat finishing with 360 grit with a 3" DA. Lastly, I cut the gloss black vinyl and wrestled it onto the inserts. And here is the finished product. These should work well with the the black/red Ecoboost emblems and the red tailgate and grill lettering.

I will post follow up photos of the badges on the truck tomorrow.

As promised, here are photos of the badges after installation. Not the greatest quality photos but they'll have to work. I'm very pleased with the results

Kinda "luxury" look.
Great idea for a truck with enough mods to blur the trim level lines.

I prefer little chrome or silver trim on a vehicle, so I take the opportunity to minimalize those colors when possible

How did you remove them?
They are held on by 3 plastic bosses that fit into corresponding holes on the vent. I slipped a thin nylon trim removal tool under the bottom edge and gently pried the badge up so I could see the 3 bosses. I then cut them with an extremely sharp metal chisel type trim removal tool by tapping them with a small dead blow mallet and they were off.

So since you cut the mounting tabs off, did you use double sided tape or ??? to put the vent insert back in place?

Don't know about this. Voids have a natural affect on your eyes and brain. Draws attention and asks a question on what missing.

In another post there was a vent for sale that actually vented the eng compartment. They were ridiculous prices, so I am thinking of DIY my own vent with my initials instead of Fords and opening up the vent.
