Engine Knock

Had my 2020 Ranger fx4 in for service on Monday for 50k transmission service/flush, cooling system service & multipoint inspection...
When I picked it up later afternoon noticed engine knocking in 1st-3rd gears... Called dealer & they said couldn't have been anything they did?! Never had a knock before!
Bringing it in next week again ... any thoughts?

The only thing I can think is that they overfilled the fluid. It’s possible some debris could’ve been dislodged and stuck in the valve body but that’s unlikely at 50k miles. If it wasn’t doing it before, it’s obviously something the dealership did… This is why I don’t take my vehicles to dealerships for service. Even when they obviously do something incorrectly, they deny and blame the customer.

So if I understand correctly - the knock goes away in gears 4-10? Or have you not been faster than gear 3?

Did you answer? They will just keep knocking…

Check your skid plates. Only can hear them rattle at slow speeds. Anything they could have touched could be loose. Various other things can cause a knocking noise too doing that service.

@Dereku is right - check those skids and also see if any heat shields are loose or bent and check any exhaust clamps in the area they accessed to perform those services.

A member on here had what he thought was knocking and it turned out to be either a loose exhaust clamp or a pin-hole leak in his exhaust - don’t recall exactly which. Another member had a heat shield that was making contact with something.

It wouldn’t be the first time a tech moved, bent, loosened, or altered something to make things easy for themselves and forgot to put things back to their proper state. Instead of removing the belly pan of my Passat, a tech took a sawzall to it so they could access the oil drain plug.

Anything can happen out there - it’s like the Wild West.

This is something I'm worried about. Im going to have to do the 60k mile service. The trucks running fine as is... I swear if they screw it up ill be pretty mad.

Could be classic examples of the Pygmalion Effect , and fully expecting the dealer to have screwed something up, isn't that what dealerships do besides pushing fuel system cleanings ?

To elaborate I had a low speed knocking after my transmission replacement. Slid underneath when I got home and started poking things. Skid plate was loose. Wiper arms were not put on in the right position either but that was 54k miles ago. Still wrong.
