HOW EFFICIENT ARE K&N® FILTERS AT TRAPPING CONTAMINANTS?
Laboratory tests utilizing ISO 5011 test protocols demonstrate that most K&N® air filters achieve overall filtration efficiency in the range of 97% to 99%. (The ability of an air filter to protect an engine is generally measured in accordance with laboratory testing procedure ISO 5011.) K&N® air filter designs are subjected to ISO 5011 testing involving coarse and fine test dust, and the test results are measured by a specific air filtration efficiency number. K&N® filters are designed to provide exceptional airflow while simultaneously targeting an overall filtration efficiency that meets or exceeds OEM standards.
Hi James,

The metric of importance is the number of grams a filter holds while performing at 95% of new. K&N fails miserably. I am not a fan of K&N. Their lab analysis if so biased to showcase their filters. Run what you like....for me...you cannot beat the Motorcraft filter for performance or longevity. I know Ford Performance offers K&N....Imo...they are stupid on this one...they are selling based on the name K&N. We never used K&N in offroad racing...just flat did not work. There are a few aftermarket Manufactures of which I am less than impressed. K&N is one of them.

Love/hate for K&N. Most know what opinions are and everyone has one. Mine is worth what you have paid for it.
I have used K&N in other vehicles in the past with no problems. I don't expect any in my Ranger.
YMMV

When I had my tune installed, I specifically asked them to leave the stock filter. I’m more concerned about off-roading/dust/particles and having peace of mind than a few mpg if that. Plus, I’m too stupid to remember to oil it and clean it.

That is a perty little Chev engine.
As to air cleaner filters, I am convinced to use a Motorcraft in my Ranger.

They make the filters the same way they did 12 years ago...
I seriously doubt any reputable company makes a product the exact same way for 12 years. In my business products are constantly improved, and I believe filter companies are also continuously testing, analyzing and improving based on evolving technology. Not so much a testimony for K&N, but for any serious manufacturer that wants to keep ahead of the game. Ford doesn't make a vehicle the same way for 12 years.
But that is a beautiful car!

I had one in my 05 Xterra. Put it right after we bought it. Traded it in for the Ranger with 17 years and 300,000 Miles. No issues at all. And that was driving it out here in Arizona where we get Insane dust storms and dust gets Everywhere. Engine ran good no issues at all with grim or dirt in the oil.

Debating on getting one for the Ranger, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. But overall I have to say that I was very pleased with the one in the Xterra. I know people that use them on their sand rails out here and swear by them.

I know everyone has their opinions and experiences, but this was the only experience that I have had so far.
