I purchased the Ford performance tune through blue oval industries and have an appointment with my local dealership later this week. When I talked to the dealership to schedule and see how much they charge to install, they had no idea what was involved with the install and just told me they charge $100/hr with 1 hr minimum.

So for those that have had their dealership do the install, how much of the install did you do before taking it to the dealership? Can I do everything besides the final upload? I would prefer not to pay a tech to install an air filter and download software, but I don't want them to get upset if I do some of the install myself.

This is definitely something you can do yourself. Filter... Just 'maintenance'. Flashing the tune, the device will come with directions and should walk you through the process as you flash.

so if your truck is still under warranty and you have a dealer that is honest / trustworthy they will need to do all of the tune.
that said if you can use a smart phone and post on this forum you can do 100% your self. However, if you have a warranty issue and do it without the dealer taking your money they could say the tune was not done correctly and voids whatever part of the warranty.
the reality is the ford perf. pack tune is very simple. you plug in the pro cal to the obd port and follow directions on the screen. then you swap the paper air filter for the one that came with the pack and its done. the hard part is getting the air filter box lid open and not mashing a finger.

Yeah, but the tune has to be installed by the dealership or ASE certified tech to retain the factory warranty

I had my Roush tune installed at my dealer who sold me my truck, they had a flat fee worked out for it and it was either $100 or $150. The Roush tune has to be installed at a registered dealer so that I get a 3 yr 36k warranty on the motor and drive train. This warranty is above and beyond the oem warranty. If you install it yourself the warranty is void. I installed my cold air kit and exhaust myself.

I had the fpp installed by the dealership back in march. Prior to bringing it in i went ahead and connected it to my home computer and registered it to my email address. You may want to got ahead and do that because if they register it with their email you wont be able to check for updates. Then I brought it in which required the backup of existing factory tune. Uploading factory tune, download new tune and install. i don't think it took more than 2 hours to do all that. Also I installed the air filter myself. If you want to save some time/money you could probably check with the dealership if you do the back first @ home but i didn't want to risk anything on the warranty so i never connected the tuner to the truck prior.

Thanks! This is what I would like to do as well. What did you have to give to the dealership with you doing a couple steps before bringing it in? Did you have to provide them with the login you used to register it?

What I did with my kit before taking it to the dealer. Created my account (I already had that from the drift stick in the RS), redeemed the code, downloaded the software, connected the unit to my computer and updated the unit to the latest firmware version. Connected to the truck to capture the VIN. Returned to the computer to get the flash based on VIN. This is where I stopped and brought mine to the dealer. I had already gone over it with the advisor there and they agreed that up to the flash step nothing was updating the truck, just reading so they were fine with me doing that. At the dealer they installed the filter and flashed the tune. Price was well, free. But I got the service ticket showing they did the install. I've got a good relationship with the service advisors, parts, and the lead techs at the dealer. I would say they would likely be $100 for most off the street customers for that tune since the process is so easy. I really suggest making your own account for the software and bringing a windows laptop with the software installed so that you have all the parts to manage it later if needed.

The way you put it, because of the tune, you now get 6 yr. 72k warranty. You may want to revisit that topic with your dealer, or anyone that is familiar with FPP or tunes in general. I have asked for clarity from sellers of the tune and Ford warranty and ESP. No clear answers.
Some interpret it as your warranty is diminished from 5/60K drive train to 3/36K. I interpreted as the tuner device is 3/36K and that the truck warranty stays the same, unless it can be proven that the tune is the cause of failure.

Definitely brush up on the warranty info.
https://performanceparts.ford.com/download/PDFS/fpp-warranty.pdf

"This Performance Packs and Components Limited Warranty begins upon installation and registration of the part(s) with Ford Performance and remains in effect for the balance of 36 months or 36,000 miles / 60,000 kilometres, whichever occurs first, calculated from the start date of the manufacturer's New Vehicle Limited Warranty."

To me that reads as the actual tuner device (performance pack component) itself has a 3 year warranty that starts from the beginning of the vehicles warranty.
There is no way a manufacturer would give you an additional 3 years warranty for modifying the engine software, even if it is a Ford Performance item. But what do I know!

Yes, that was my understanding.
If you get the FPP tune after you have passed 3yr/36K, then essential there is no warranty on the FPP
because the warranty began when the vehicle was new.
Another important note is this:

Don't read into it. I said I have a 36k/3 yr full warranty on the power train. It runs concurrent. There is no need to revisit my initial post.
