Shock valving is based on percentages. Most shocks are 50/50, i.e. the compression and rebound forces are equal. Now for example, most drag race cars run 90/10 shocks in the front, 90% compression and 10% rebound, to allow the front end to rise easily for weight transfer to the rear. From the way people describe it, I'm thinking the FX4 shocks are maybe more like 40/60, soft on compression to absorb bumps off-road and more rebound to keep the tires on the earth after they are compressed. Maybe good for off-road but not necessarily the best for on-road.
Just an educated guess, I am not a suspension engineer and I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
I have a friend who owns a shock dyno. I plan to upgrade to the Fox shock kit Ford sells. When I get my FX4 shocks off, I will send them to my buddy and have him run them.

Along with dampening profile high/low speed etc., he can do fade, etc,

Be interesting to know for sure. ;)

with that data he will be able to say what type of terrain the shock is set up for and works best in?
We might be able to (the collective we), my buddy preps and builds road racing cars, so I am not sure he will be able to add much on the terrain applicability, but who knows, he is one clever dude.

ORIGINAL POST: My 4X4 rides decently on the streets with the stock suspension (comparing the ride to my past three 4X4 trucks) but I haven't compared the ride with a FX4.

EDIT: The KO2's improved the street ride over the factory OEM's...smoother. They are bigger than the OEM's and probably the sidewall construction helped this. Wasn't expecting this with the more aggressive tread...nice surprise.

Changing my tires out and adding the RC 2.5" level kit make a small difference but in the end the Fx4 really isn't that great a suspension. We have speed bumps through most neighborhoods here and with the Fx4 I'd be bounced all over the cab, didn't matter if I was going 5 or 20 mph. With the Eibach now I pretty much float over them and have never been bounced around like before. Off road there's no comparison! Hitting bumps especially washboards are like glass now. Any who says different hasn't changed theirs out to a better shock. :sunglasses:

SO,,,,this to perspective,, get a FX4 or a Tremor for the best ride around town? That sounds good to me, thanks for replying, I just needed a little help with this. I guess now I need to lookup the Eibach shocks,,

You can't go wrong with the Fox, Bilstein or Eibach shocks. Any of those will make a significant improvement. If you're also going to change out your tires to larger ones then adding the Tremor package will give you everything you need.

FX4 in the habitat Ford possibly designed it for

what everyone expects it to react like:

You've already admitted you don't take yours off road so how would you know how they handle?

Report back once you do any I'm sure you'll have a whole different opinion based on facts not memes.:sunglasses:

Dave my friend. you can troll me all you want, but i really don't share everything about my life on here.
I may not be a hard core off roader, but I did buy my FX4 for more than mall runs.
Numerous FX4 F150's from my stable saw lots of trail time.
Trolling?? Again Pot meet Kettle!!!

If that were true you'd know the Fx4 are junk! If they were so good there wouldn't be so many threads here about replacing them.

its a key piece of the puzzle obviously
i got ripped by a member here because i said FX shocks can run over speed bumps with ease at speed. If I recall, Phil liked that post.
absorb the shock and rebound quick...sounds like a good offroad shock to me for higher speed travels like desert running, but not so much for mall crawling or zooming though streets late for your nascar job. keeping in mind, offroad in general has many different terrains, so which did Ford choose is a valuable question
i think alot of people bought the wrong suspension setup, had to sink money onto it to meet their needs, and then think its only right to bash Ford and anyone who disagrees with them because others are bashing it too..
Illusionary truth effect comes to mind
The salesman I was dealing with when I ordered my Tremor (before I bought my FX4) was a pretty knowledgable guy (I have been driving, racing, rebuilding, etc. cars for about 55 years, so I am a pretty knowledgeable guy too, hence can tell the difference), when I asked him about the FX4 shocks he said, "ah, pretty much garbage". When he got the "raised eyebrow" from me, he said, "well, they are not garbage, but the Fox shocks on the Tremor are MUCH better shocks for just about any circumstance, on road or off". He could see that eyebrow go back down and a smile come back on my face, so he knew he had made his point. :)

I will grant you there is a lot of group think and placebo effect when individuals are out "testing" their rigs. I think the internet actually does a service to those that make aftermarket parts that serve specific purposes as it gets the word out. Can something like the FX4 shocks be unfairly punished with catch all "trash" moniker? Sure, especially when some of the most knowledgeable people on any given forum expresses those opinions, when in fact, their butt dynos are subject to confirmation bias error.

I have never worked in a motor company, but I do know there are epic misses that happen. I bought a 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with the 6 Spd manual transmission. That flywheel, clutch combination design was about as ridiculous as any I have ever driven, no actually, it was far worse than any other design I have driven. A complete mismatch of components. When you see something like that, you realize epic breakdowns of design or component choices can happen.

I know I am probably labeled a K02 fanboy already, but I think those tires are just about perfect for a truck like ours. When I switched from Duratracs (which are fabulous tires, but suffer from a couple negatives that are noticeable), the K02's are like, ahhhh... that's better. ;)

There is nothing with-in 1,000 miles of here like those pics. Mine will be just a grocery-getter, run around about here, just piddling. With the money I'll be spending,, I want a nice ride to enjoy. Maybe I should look at the Tremor,,,,,,

I'm ordering a new 2023 as soon as possible and want a 4x4. How much difference is there between the two? Does one ''ride'' better? This will be just a grocery-getter, no ''off-roading'' for me. I'd like to have the best ride available, with the 4x4 power,, if needed. Thanks for looking at this,,,
fx4 gets you very bouncy shocks and extra skid plates a locker and the terrain modes I would definitely save money and go regular 4x4

The way the salesman explained it to me, the standard 4x4 will be stiffest (probably also the least squat when loaded with X weight in the bed), FX4 next, Tremor next. The Tremor has the most pleasing ride around town and also the most articulation off road as it is the softest sprung, but will also have the most squat (to a point, as it also has a progressive rear spring package), at least, that is what the salesman said…. ;)
He is correct though all of our trucks have two stage springs in the rear
