Yeah, I had many problems with the 09 Tacoma I had.
Frame rust was still an issue then as well.
I looked at some brand new ones in the parking lot of a Toyota dealer not long ago. Guess what? Almost every weld on the front half of the frame had rust starting to show already.

Aside from a major oops that resulted in a new engine, I had similar issues in the first two years from day 1. I tolerated it because they were inconvenient at worst and the warranty covered everything with no fuss. I'm feeling much less tolerant after yesterday's fiasco...

My wife was driving on I275 in Tampa when the truck just died at 50 mph. Locals refer to this stretch of road as "malfunction junction" as it is a 5-6 lane road that funnels all local traffic either into or through Tampa. Really bad spot to have problems. Luckily my wife kept it cool and coasted safely off the interstate into a parking lot. The dash is lit up like a Christmas tree and revving to 3000 rpm when she tried starting it again. She popped the hood and found the cable to the rad fan sensor was ripped in half, just dangling there (Pic below).

Looking at the design for this system, it appears the wire is held up by a short section of rubber hose. Only evidence I have of this hose is the piece left behind on its mounting point shown below. This hose failed, fell down into the spinning pulley below and then the wire got ripped in half.

I've been driving this truck through BFE blissfully unaware of how close the truck has been to just cutting it's own lifeline. Sure I could go in and secure this wire, but what other system on the truck is one bump away from gutting itself?

Not trying to be dramatic, but I really don't feel I can trust this truck to get me home anymore.

damn what a stupid design. Them rubber tubes always dry rot quickly. I wonder what they were thinking. Is your wife a power lifter? How did she manage to steer that mofo through several lanes of traffic? Glad she’s ok.

Lmao not even close! I guess she was just going fast enough that she could steer OK. She handled it like a champ and was more worried about ruining my day with news about the truck!

Ford needs to hire you to do extensive off road testing as I do believe you are right, the vast majority is tested for urban city dwellers.
Hi Max,

Not ture...The Durability Test rout is a real torture test. There are sections where to mantain a speed of 30 mph we had to use strobe lights to flash in the driver's side window as it was impossible to see the speedometer. This portion is called Silver Creek. Then there are pot holes and so on.

Best,
Phil

I can tell the frame and suspension has a lot of thought put into it. It’s probably the stoutest midsize truck I’ve ever drove. hopefully the mechanics and electronics hold up as well. My main fear being the transmission, it seems very near death when it hangs up and starts jerking me around.

Man I'm getting strong Robbinsville vibes here.... where in rural NC are you?

<Rville

I have an unpopular opinion around here where I have major doubts about these transmissions. I think it has too many gears, like you do, and mine jerks me around as well when I slow down going up my hilly driveway. Its definitely not right.

I usually beat the shit out of mine once a week (3 years in July) and it's good minus 2 small dings. Had to bend a bracket into place and replace the plastic on the rear bumper after getting rear-ended too. Naw, my truck handles everything well. Only 26k miles on it as I have a commuter car too.
