make sure the ground is on the chassis side of the terminal (where my finger is) or even on a separate chassis ground. Don't put the negative directly on the battery.

Ah, that clears it up for me!
I've got it now.
Thanks.
The good thing about these chargers if you have it grounded wrong it won't mess anything up, it just won't work. There's a series of lights on the front that will initially light up and when it gets to #7 it's fully charged. You can still leave it on there and it will keep it topped off which is good for someone who doesn't drive every day. Below those lights are the battery setting just push the mode button until the two in the middle are lit up for the AGM battery, see pic below. They will keep that setting so you don't have to reset it every time.

Dave, do you know what happens if there is a power outage? Does it remember the state it was in (the two middle LEDs)? I'm wondering since I plan to use this while we are away from home.

Edit: Duh. I see you addressed that:

That's what's nice about it keeps your settings. So if you want to charge a motorcycle battery just toggle through to the first light and it will be at that one the next time you plug it in. As far as power outages go I'd just make sure you didn't plug it into a GFCI outlet just in case that one got tripped too.

Ya, that's the same Ford branded charger I'm using, and it's doing a great job!

But, for some reason, my brain didn't associate that outer battery terminal with chassis ground, even though everyone said so.

But I finally got it.

Thank for responding and pointing it out to me.

We have all done this.

However . . .

There's nothing on that ground point. It looks like there is from the picture but that front wire is connected to a different bolt.
