i have test driven a new frontier. Owned one, a 2005 frontier. If green is your favorite color, get a frontier, as the Ranger doesn’t currently have that option. And I haven’t seen a green splash edition yet. Nothing wrong with them, and I got 189,000 miles from my frontier. My biggest pro for the frontier is the closest Ford dealers to me aren’t very good.

and I share your concerns @ the ranger, so I got an extended warranty from Ziegler, based on users here.

But the Ranger has gotten me thru 29.5k miles in little over a year, and I love driving it. So you can’t go wrong either way.

Thanks for your input and experiences. Not concerned about the color too much. Just others positive or negative experiences. Yes, dealer location and how they treat you are a big part too.

Although I probably can’t do a whole lot of convincing, I’ll give my two cents. I was in the market for a midsize truck and had already counted out the Tacoma and Ridgeline for personal reasons. That left me with the Colorado ZR2, Ranger Tremor, and Frontier Pro-4X. Although I read all I could about the trucks, none of it mattered as much as driving each and getting a feel for it because at the end of the day, you’re the one who has to drive it everyday. I personally thought the acceleration on the frontier left a little to be desired and I felt that the rear view mirror was obstructive of my view out the windshield (huge deal for me). I didn’t like the Colorado aesthetically or based on how I felt in the truck (not to mention the $10k markup). The Ranger (which wasn’t my top choice) left me very happily surprised and I made my order by the end of that week. Now it’s just a waiting game. I’m content with the choice I made after getting to feel them all out.

Absolutely agree, a test drive and getting out and kickin the tires were part of my process as well. Looks like we both took the same route in making a decision. I guess the "waiting" (which i really don't mind within reason) is making me second guess

Once you get your Ranger, be happy with your purchase. Don't show any regrets especially when we are close to a new redesigned model for 2023 or 2024.

I'll second this.....this is my first turbo engine after having over 12 different Taco's spanning all 3 gen's......but...I hated the 3.5L motor in my last 2019 Tacoma TRD OR 4x4 and had to trade it after 6 months because it felt "dangerous" and plain gutless in the So CA traffic.....and the constant shifting was just plain lame.......I'll never buy another Taco unless they "fix" they stupid motor/tranny combo! I test drove all the competition and nothing was perfect!......there are always traded offs.....I liked the Frontier but I think they also have "perceived" tranny issues......not sure if they are real or not but I just didn't feel "wowed" with the Frontier....

The 2021 Ford Ranger Lariat Tremor check all the boxes for me!.....more than capable off road for the stuff I do which isn't crazy hard core, great set-up right from the factory and no need to upgrade tires/shocks/, super comfy interior (except for no memory seats...lame!), and the motor/tranny work great together and it's supper peppy and just plain a blast with the Ford Performance tune.......and the price seemed fair considering what you get for the $$ especially compared to the Taco.......HOWEVER, I plain on keeping this truck for a long time and I have read about fuel in oil "issues" on here and I just sorta disregard them as I have yet to hear about a motor failing because of it.......and it does have a track record and it does have great reliability........BUT, I did purchase the Ford extended service plan for about $1,250 which covers most everything for 6 years or 125,000 miles.......I'm more concerned about the fancy "gadgets/electronics" breaking and costing who knows how much .....more so than the motor........

lastly......I know I made the right decision for ME but reading these forums everyday is like watching the news......they mostly only tell the bad stuff and not the great stuff!!.....I stopped watching the news and I might stop checking in so often on this forum because it can be a bit overwhelming at times......I'd rather just drive my bad a$$ Ranger and enjoy life!!!

After reading this, I think I will take your advise and enjoy the fact I placed a "made to order" vehicle that I really enjoyed to test drive and enjoyed drooling over in the showroom. I guess I'm just seeing the negative issues on the forums, and that's making me second guess. While it's definitely not my first new vehicle, I just wanted to reassure myself for long term ownership. You seem to have had your share of truck ownership and I do value an experienced (more experienced than I) truck owners view. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction and seeing the forest through the trees. I think the extended warranty is a viable point and option when it comes time to finalizing my purchase. I think that peace of mind is needed in my case. Maybe that's just the ticket to meet my demands. Was the warranty a FORD warranty or a third party?

Reliability with respect to an auto can have a multitude of definitions/interpretations but if you are one that plans on keeping an auto for let's say 10yrs/150 k miles I think that the odds are greater that you'll have more issues with a turbo charged vehicle than one that is NA - just a matter of some increased points of failure with a turbo . When I installed my catch can in the myriad of hoses and wires tucked into that area - my thoughts were " I hope nothing down there ever breaks".
I've owned turbos from back in the early 80s and fixing issues used to be fairly easy and vehicle reliability has come a long way but so has the complexity.

Not sure why you ordered a Ranger in the first place. While waiting for it you're test driving other vehicles, so I can't imagine you will be happy with a Ranger, or any Ford for that matter. Get what you feel comfortable with. I definitely don't want to "convince" you to buy from a company you have such reservations with. Also, it's pretty hard to gage the dependability of a vehicle that has only been on the market for 3 years.

You say you are impressed with the new Frontier, but what do you know about its dependability?

Actually one of the reasons I DID order this gen, was because I do not care for the new design similar to the Maverick. I'm an old school kinda guy and enjoy the metal bumper look over the plastic skinned bumpers. Plus with this being the last year or two of FORD making this gen, I would have hoped most of the gremlins by now would have been taken care of (maybe wishful thinking on my part But, no, I will not regret my purchase based on style or features. The vehicle DOES fit me perfectly and checks off all the boxes. Just hope it gives me stress free miles when it comes to repairs. I plan to maintain it probably better than what most manufactures recommend. But like mentioned above, maybe an extended warranty would put me at peace. And if it visits the shop too many times for my liking, I will just trade it in. Appreciate your input

Yep, I'm aware, and that's why I was surprised to hear it still has some issues (some small, some not so). But, that was a determining factor for me as well. As I'm sure for others on here. Good point

I think we all know that. They are on the same platform, but have many differences, starting with engine/transmissions. I don't think you can use reliability results on the ROW version as reliability results for the NA version. Just sayin".

Just to add that ford ranger 2022 got a good reliability rating this time around. Also, I read somewhere that the dealers hardly ever see Rangers in for anything major.

When I was looking at buying I ranger I was kind of worried too. I found a certified preowned with 1499 miles on it. Which is still pretty new but it came with an extended warranty. I would recommend getting one just incase and when you go sign, they usually sell it at a discounted price.

I love my ranger. Some people complain about the transmission, but it never bothered me. It can be weird at times but it smooths out the longer you drive it.

Since the 2022 Nissan is an updated model I would suggest to hold off for a little while to make sure the gremlins are out.

My Ranger is the 3rd brand new Ford I've bought in the last 13 years. Two Ecoboosts, and one NA. All have been virtually trouble free beyond standard maintenance and modifications. By virtually, I mean I've had exactly 2 issues. One had a recall for a steering torque sensor, it was replaced without incident. The other had some peeling interior chrome trim, it was replaced under warranty.

$0.00 repair costs out of pocket accross 3 vehicles, 13 years, and roughly 200k miles. Ford spent maybe $200 repairing them including labor.

Not sure if that sells you on Ford quality. But it has me.

Also, the last Nissan I drove with a soul was a '91 Sentra SE-R. Good luck if you go that route.

I agree with this statement, and did take this into account. However, the 2.3 and tranny have been around the US market for many years and that was taken into consideration for me. But you are correct sir

It does help ease my mind. I do appreciate your feedback and others reading this post. I'm sure there are others out there that have the same reservations as do. I really appreciate everybody's input good, bad, or other.

So, while I've been responding to this thread all morning, on the company's dime, I received an email from FORD my vehicle is scheduled for production 04/04/22 and gave me a VIN

I'm taking this as a sign and going full steam ahead, jumping in with both feet, etc. I appreciate everybody who has responded to this thread and will continue to monitor it, but will recommend to the FORUM Mods to maybe bump this thread off the priority pedestal if such a thing exists. I will post my production update to the appropriate thread for my fellow "wait listers". Again, really appreciate the input
