Drove my first Chinese car today down in Aruba, hate to admit this but it was pretty nice. Plenty of power, fit and finish was good and they are all over the place, it used to be Nissan or Toyotas on the road. There is something definitely to worry about if they enter the US in my opinion. Also saw a bunch of Ranger Raptors.

In a recent trade deal, Geely and BYD will soon be bringing some of their EVs to Canada - limited numbers initially to stay under the threshold before tariffs would be applied.

The hope is that there is good consumer acceptance that will result in production/assembly opportunities in Canada. With the Big 3 under pressure to move production to the U.S., this might help secure existing, and create new jobs in the Canadian automotive sector.

Who knows, maybe my next truck will be a BYD.

BYD sells pickups that are well rated but the recent Canada deal will not bring any in. The existing quota is for low cost EVs. You are correct, BYD has announced that they are establishing the first 20 dealerships and that they anticipate that they will build Canadian cars in Canada in one of the abandoned US factories. I've driven Chinese cars while visiting China and they are cheaper than American cars and far better quality. I'll be first to trade my Ranger in for a better Chinese model. "The BYD Shark 6 is a new mid-size plug-in hybrid (PHEV) pickup truck, marking BYD's entry into the global ute/truck market. It features a DMO (Dual Mode Off-road) platform, combining a 1.5L turbo engine with dual electric motors for 430+ horsepower, offering ~100km electric range (NEDC) and rugged, SUV-like comfort. " Current price is $50,000 US and available in Mexico.

I’ve read good things about their mid-size truck and was hoping they would part of the first round. Oh well, I’m in no hurry to trade and can certainly wait until they are available here just so I can test-drive one.

All U.S. vehicles will likely be imports at that point along with import tariffs, while BYD just might be a domestically produced item. 🤷‍♂️
