WORK IN PROGRESS

Introduction

The goal of this thread is to list the most useful frequencies and channels to use with CB, FRS, GMRS, MURS & HAM (Amateur Radio) equipment, especially for off-roading and emergency situations. I will update this initial post as I go, based on other users' input, and hopefully we will get it stickied.

The idea for this thread came when I was commenting in Radio stuff started by Frenchy. Thank you :like:

Back Story
I got both my GMRS and Amateur Radio licenses in 2020, and my first truck early April 21 (love my Tremor ?).
I want to install a mobile radio inside the truck but space is limited, I don't want to drill when not necessary, and it seems that my preferred radio will not fit in a roof console like the ones from 4WD Interiors (OFC Ranger and Secousse for more info on that one)

So while I'm waiting for the remote Bluetooth microphone/display along with the AnyTone AT-D578UVIII PLUS to be released so I can mount under the driver seat, I bought a set of 2-way radios.
Yes! Two great-value-for-money 2-way radios (Radioddity GA-2S) that can operate on the UHF frequency range 400-470MHz. Means they can work on FRS, GMRS, the ham 70cm band, and some frequencies that might get you in trouble. What I love about them, is that they're fool-proof: there's only 2 knobs - one for on/off/volume, and one to select channels from 1 to 16. Morever they can be charged with a simple USB cable. I will use them while off-roading: with a spotter, or friends who don't have a radio in their vehicle. See comment #4 below for further details.

As much as most folks will say it's difficult to agree on which specific channels and frequencies to use, I have a real need:
With 16 channels only accessible with one knob, I'm limited in what I can program and prioritize, so I needed to create a "Top 16" of the most useful UHF frequencies/channels that my radios can legally support. Channel #1 will be the most useful and easy to access, all the way to channel #16 being maybe a local repeater that folks would have to configure themselves based on their location.

I'll document my findings in this thread, including VHF frequencies too, even if I don't need them yet.
Based on this, I will create CHIRP configurations for both my handheld transceivers, but also my mobile radio in the future.

No idea how to convert my onenote page into text for the forum but the attached PDF I keep for reference might be helpful.

I'm not sure why you would want to only use 16 frequencies when most radios on the market offer 128 memory slots at a very minimum, but for simplex work with non-hams, MURS and GMRS will be the most useful. You can skip the GMRS repeater frequencies if you won't use them to save channels.

Many off-road guys will use business band channels without any thought of who else might have a legal claim on them. I don't see the need now that MURS and GMRS are available but you will find many of the business band channels pre-programmed into radios sold for off-road use.

A decent Chinese radio for mobile use in a small form factor is the dual-band Leixen VV898 (in 10w for ~$50 and 25w for ~$90) or the clones sold under different names. It is hardly larger than an HT and is opened for TX across pretty much any VHF/UHF frequency you might be using. They are supported by Chirp and I've been happy with the three that I own.

While GMRS / UHF is great for handhelds, you might consider staying open to VHF. Dual-band rigs are more common than UHF-only and 2 meters / MURS can be a better frequency in the woods, especially when you already have a vehicle for mounting a proper antenna.

About my Radioddity GA-2S handheld radios
Radioddity GA-2S UHF Long Range USB Two way Radio [2/4/6 Packs]

I came across these radios completely by chance during Prime Days and paid about $22 for a pack of 2. The value-for-money seems unbeatable, and the reviews are great (some of them might contain information that I will add in the initial post)
I'm not member of any off-roading group yet, but I can see how their cheap packs of six could become handy for group outings...

Why I bought this:
Beyond just the price and great reviews, they're super easy to use, and I can charge them with a USB cable from the truck, a power bank or a solar panel.

Addendum
According to an Amazon review, they came pre-programmed with the channels below. I need to create a backup with CHIRP and confirm this:

No idea how to convert my onenote page into text for the forum but the attached PDF I keep for reference might be helpful.
Thank you for your contribution! I might contact you separately and ask for an export in a different format.

I'm not sure why you would want to only use 16 frequencies when most radios on the market offer 128 memory slots at a very minimum, but for simplex work with non-hams, MURS and GMRS will be the most useful. You can skip the GMRS repeater frequencies if you won't use them to save channels.
I may need to rewrite my blurb for clarity, but one of the lists I will try to put together is a "top 16" because my handheld radios only have 16 programable channels. This is very much for folks who want an inexpensive turn-key solution without having to think too much about it.

For everyone else with a mobile radio or more advanced handhelds, your list of frequencies will make a lot more sense.

Many off-road guys will use business band channels without any thought of who else might have a legal claim on them. I don't see the need now that MURS and GMRS are available but you will find many of the business band channels pre-programmed into radios sold for off-road use.
Seems to be the case for the handhelds I've documented in the comment above. I will write down the pre-programed frequencies for reference.

Thanks for sharing this info. It will be useful to other folks I'm sure!

While GMRS / UHF is great for handhelds, you might consider staying open to VHF. Dual-band rigs are more common than UHF-only and 2 meters / MURS can be a better frequency in the woods, especially when you already have a vehicle for mounting a proper antenna.
As stated, it's a "Work In Progress".
Totally open to VHF for more "advanced" handheld transceivers and mobile rigs that are dual-band or triple-band. It's just that for now, my example dirt-cheap radios are single-band on UHF ?

Thanks!

146.4200 is used by a lot of off roaders around here
Also don't forget to visit www.RepeaterBook.com* to check for Amateur Radio and GMRS Repeaters in your area. Check your radio programming software. Many of them will pull data straight from RepeaterBook. Or you can curate your own list on the site and export it to CSV and import it into the programming software you use.

Thanks a lot for your input.
I’ve been using RepeaterBook a lot with manually programmable radios. I’ll revisit it with off-reading in mind to see if there’s anything on that topic that is more “interstate” centric and appropriate for my shared list.

And just to confirm: you definitely meant 146.42, and not 146.52 - right?

Four Wheel Drive on the Four Two.
It's also the unofficial simplex frequency (basically Channel 19) here in the Greater New River / Black Canyon City Metropolis of Arizona.

Phoenix has some cat named "Woody" that sits on 52 all day long and has a reflector that people get into from all over the internet. I went to check my simplex reach from a hill top in town and got a guy in Anchorage, Alaska. WTFARKLE! Then he explained I wasn't simplex all the way into AK - just 10 miles to Woody's abode and then through the internet to Alaska.

Anyone start using an RTL-SDR Dongle as a software Defined Radio? It's a LOT of fun. Good chatter on public service frequencies that are P25-II.

Bought one a few months ago but haven’t made the time to properly explore its possibilities yet ?
