I have not driven a vehicle with the new start/stop technology. I observed a pickup truck almost rear end a car at a stop light the other day. The truck had stopped in the line of vehicles at the light, then suddenly lunged forward with the driver immediately hitting the brakes. I wondered if this was due to the start/stop technology...
Stop/Start works seamless on the new Ranger. And you can turn it off if you want.

I've driven a suv with start stop and although for the most part I'm not a fan, once you get used to it you don't even notice it. As for running stop signs it doesn't turn off immediately so if you are at a stop sign your not going to be stopped long enough for it to shut off. The only annoying thing is there is a very slight delay when accelerating from a stop light. So if you want to drag race off a light your just lift you foot off the brake slightly and the engine will start back up prior to the light changing.

None of that has anything to do with a normally functioning start/stop system and an alert driver. At worst, there would be a very short delay in the car starting to accelerate from the light. Once the car is on though, it's on. And it usually activates as soon as you take your foot off the brake. I have one of these systems on my BMW and the default setting is "off". I activated the start/stop feature just to see what it's like---I found it to be annoying, personally. It would likely be a lot smoother in something that's more comfort oriented. It may be less noticeable in the Ranger. I don't do a lot of stop and go or driving in traffic jams, so it is not a feature I consider.

That's true, lift your foot off the brakes and it fires right up. If you like that kind of stuff. lol

Nice I did not know there was an option to turn this off on the new rangers. That was the only thing I didn't want on my truck.

There is a button in front of the shift lever that disables start/stop. It does reset every time you shut the engine off so you will have to shut it off every time you start the truck. Honestly once you get used to it you will probably won't bother shutting it off it's pretty seamless.

Well good to know there is a button to shut it off. When I heard this was a standard feature, lets just say I wasn't it's biggest fan. But I hope it is pretty seamless as you say and I will be very happy.

From page 135 of the Owner's Manual:

Disabling Auto-Start-Stop
Press the Auto-Start-Stop
button located on the center
console to switch the system off.
The button will illuminate. The system will
only be deactivated for the current ignition
cycle. Press the button again to restore
Auto-Start-Stop function.
If your vehicle is in an Auto-Start-Stop
state and you shift the transmission to
reverse without pressing the brake, a
message telling you to press the brake
appears. You must press the brake pedal
within 60 seconds, or you will need to shift
to park and manually restart your vehicle.
Note: If the Shift to P, Restart Engine
message appears and the amber
Auto-Start-Stop indicator light is flashing,
automatic restart is not available. The
vehicle must be restarted manually. See
Information Displays (page 87).
