I went through a WOW carwash about a month or two ago and got an air freshener as part of the wash. I removed it from the package and slung it over the gear shift lever because I don't like things dangling from the mirror. Yesterday I went to throw out the air freshener because it was pretty well used up, and it was stuck to the trim in front of the gear shifter. At first I thought there must have been something sticky on the air freshener, as it looked like gum stuck to both my truck's plastic and the air freshener. I tried rubbing it off but wasn't getting anywhere. Turns out those things are VERY hard on some plastics when in direct contact. Now I've got a ruined piece of trim that is pretty easy to see.

Moral of the story: read the warnings on EVERYTHING. I didn't even think air fresheners had warnings, other than maybe "don't eat". If you're going to use one of the hangy-type air fresheners, either hang it from the mirror or put it on the floorboard or under the seat.

On a related note, if anyone knows of a source for a wrap or something like that to cover the plastic from the cupholders forward, I'd appreciate it!
Exact same thing happened to me. I was wondering what cause it, thought maybe some spilled coffee but could not remember spilling any. I never suspected the air freshener, but could not eule it out.....thanks for the confirmation!

I totally forgot about this warning on air freshener :curse: .

My daughter sent me some sex wax (surf board wax for those unfamiliar with the brand) air fresheners a while back and I already had too much crap hanging from my rear view, so I figured I hang it from the 12v outlet on the p/s. Well yesterday after work I decided to give the interior a good cleaning and discovered the stupid thing "melted" the cubby area. I though maybe it was just residue at first and I could clean it up. Nope, it is melted. WTH do they put in those damn things?!?!

So, I am moving on from that style of air fresheners for good, I ordered this from Amazon today. My manger uses it and he said it last a long time, and you can get refills for it.

Now I need to replace that piece, luckily they're easy to remove and install.

And just think, you are breathing in that stuff - for months on end! No wonder all sorts of cancers and autoimmune based diseases are on the rise in the first world.

All those air fresheners (both car and home) are very toxic. Personally I wouldn't be putting this in my vehicle or my house. I had a customer who used these and every time I was over there I had a hard time breathing and it would go away a few hours after I was home.

Much proof exists that air fresheners of all types, including hanging air fresheners, vent style fresheners, and other styles are toxic, harmful to your health, and even dangerous. We live in a society that has been literally scent sanitized. It has become the norm to use fragrances to mask natural human smells to make our daily lives more pleasant. But is this what we really want?

Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is well documented as a carcinogen, and it is present in significant amounts in many air fresheners. Exposure can cause cancer as well as major respiratory issues like asthma, wheezing, bronchitis, and eye, throat, and nose issues.

Phthalates

Many companies don’t list this as an ingredient in air fresheners, and in fact, some are advertised as all natural, but a 2007 NRDC study tested 14 air freshener products, and while none put phthalates on their lists of ingredients, all companies had them. Phthalates cause birth defects, reproduction problems in both men and women and many other adverse health effects.

The compound p-dichlorobenzene causes harm to the respiratory system and has been found to cause liver cancer in mice.

The Drift ones are supposed to be free of all that crap.

" Sustainably sourced wood, fragrance and essential oils. Vegan, cruelty-free and pet-friendly with no parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, dea, mineral oil, petroleum, propylene or dichlorobenzene. all of the good, none of the bad."

I'e read where there's some "good ones" but I'm not risking it. lol I have an ozone machine and if there's a funky smell in my truck, house or garage I just run that for a couple minutes and let it air out and all is good. I've never liked anything with a strong fragrance which is why I've never really like cologne and can't stand when people (mostly women) douse themselves in it.

Same, cologne/perfume gives me headaches. I prefer fruity or natural smells. Natural as in pine tress, not farts @Grumpaw

If air fresheners starting including warnings they may be forced to also warn about the hazards to smelling them, especially when used in hot encloses spaces.
That's what she said!

Look thru Amazon for dashboard trim. I've stumbled on appliqués for dashboards and consoles in fake silver woodgrain carbon fiber etc.

I rarely use cologne anymore. I can't stand some of the stuff my wife puts on. I also special order unscented antiperspirant because I just can't stand the way some of them smell.
