My wife, Margie was a Stewardess back in the 60's when you had to be thin, beautiful and single... pix is not of her but her counterparts...

When I was little, 4-6 years old, I would stand in the backseat of our '53 Chevy 210 and look up through the rear window as we came upon a steel truss bridge. As we passed under the crossbeams, they would appear to get farther away and I pretended that the the car was "sinking" while the beams remained level. After passing the highest part of the span, the car would begin to "rise" again (beams become lower) and we had to hurry out of the bridge before the last beam crushed the car!!
There were several such bridges, the scariest one being the Stillwater, Mn lift bridge with multiple arches:

A great lesson in special relativity! Sometimes I feel sorry for my grandchildren, strapped into their bolstered carseats watching Blippie videos on an iPad while crossing a concrete span bridge.

When I was younger we traveled a lot. I remember taking turns sleeping on the package shelf (as they used to call it) with my siblings. 2 would lie on the seat one in the floorboard and one in the package shelf. Man those were the days.
