I'm quite technologically challenged, but it's easy if you have a CD player on your computer. Open the " Windows media player" on your computer, then insert a CD into the computers CD player. The media player will recognize the CD. There is a little thingy at the top of the page that says "RIP". Click on that, and the computer will transfer the music on the CD to your music library.

After your done ripping all of your CD's to the library remove the last CD from the player, and insert a clean USB drive in the USB thingy on the side of your computer. The media player will recognize the USB drive. Highlight the music you want to transfer from the library to the USB drive, and drag drag them to the right where it says "drag items here". When you have all of the music moved, right above the list you see "SYNC". Click that, and grab a beer while the music tranfers.

The main thing you need to realize is that the USB connection only is used to give SYNC access to your music files. it does not pass-through music being played by another device. When connected to your phone it is using your phone like a USB drive. I have a small 128G USB 3 drive with hundreds of artists and thousands of songs that I leave plug into one of my USB ports, and it is not even half full. I just select the USB drive that shows up in SYNC and I can search the drive by artist or album or song. I usually just let it play randomly from all my songs and if one comes on that I don't want to hear just now I hit the skip track button. SYNC will also use playlists created by some other music programs. I expand my collection by searching the CD racks at thrift stores and rip them to MP3s on my computer at home and copy them to my USB drive.
Thanks, that explains a lot.

Maybe I'm missing something but I have my music in different folders according to artist.
Plays fine, no issue but when the truck is in motion, the New Search option is greyed out and I can't select the option to browse to another folder/artist/title or whatever that I want to play until the truck has stopped.
What in the world kind of design is this? I mean did Ford not think that the passenger may want to browse and find something different to listen to...
Really don't want to click the voice button and tell it to play so and so

I'm able to search folders while driving. Could you have controls locked out?

How do you check?
I can scroll the music that's in that folder but can't change to a different folder

I'll review the steps this morning on the way to work. But I've added play lists, and have music in more generalized folders, and change between without issues; while driving. And yes, always in a safe manner. If it's untenable due to circumstance, and I have a passenger, I have them make the changes.

Man, this thread dates me some, all of my old CDs are in MP3 128bps files. I really need to get them from storage, well the ones that are not in the 101-disc changer in the living room, and re-rip them to flac. Also need to get that hack installed on the old fat PS3, or the Sony BD/SACD player I bought, so I can rip my SACDs.

Tap browse, (you'll see the contents of the folder you're currently in) and the back arrow. It should take you to the folder list again. You can also tap Source, choose your USB, and then select the new folder/play list you want. The first option is quicker.

You can rip with a few old Sony BR players, too. I happened to have one in a closet, so that was nice. They're pretty cheap.

I have one too, I just refer to it as BD (Blu-ray Disc) player.

I'll have to try it later but I think when I the return button it doesn't take me to the folders....
Maybe I should create play list instead of just having things in folders only.
Think I clicked the source button but when i go back to the USB it starts playing where it left off

Yeah, I encountered this "changing music" headache on my USB drive recently. I copied all my music from itunes, where's it's lived for somewhere around 15yrs now. so the organization structure is whatever itunes made it. I wanted to listen to a song that I newly downloaded, so I set that to begin playing before I started driving. then, once I got moving, I couldn't change it. it was the only song I have by that artist, so it was stuck repeating the same damn song.

I've got Wireless AA going for nav, so voice controls wouldn't control the audio playback from the usb. I just ended up switching the source to FM radio.

but really, was doing any of that any LESS distracting to me as a driver than giving me the ability to just start playing randomly out of my entire music library?

As others have said, I use a USB stick now, but I have also used an old ipod touch. Both work fine. You may have to rip your CDs to MP3s. I don't recall if you can copy the files directly to a USB and play it or not, but you can rip them with windows or apple, or use one of several free music players to rip them.

The USB stick needs to be formated to x-fat, I think. Not FAT or NTFS.

Both work on my '21. I think this limitation has long been resolved.

I too have a USB thumb drive with about 5-10,000 songs on it from my CD collection. I usually just leave it on shuffle and let it go. Blues, Rock and Roll and Jazz are my music of choice. I can use also blue tooth my latest Sony Walkman (10,000 songs and it's only 1/2 full) and play that way also. I use the Walkman for riding my motorcycle or my local walks or blue tooth to a little portable speaker or to my tent trailer or to my Ranger. It's a very small and awesome little unit.
