I have a 2020 XLT Super Crew (112,000 kms) and my accelorator has a fault when pressing it down. Just as it starts to depress, the engine stutters. If you hold it at that very light position it will continue to stutter. If you apply more pressure, it goes away and operates normal through the rest of the stroke. Has any one ever tested the APS at home? I really don't want to pay a shop $300 to tell me I need a new APS which is only $132. If anyone has changed it themselves, does it need to be calibrated before it will work or is it just plug in and drive?

It sounds like a bad EGR differential pressure sensor. It causes the engine to stumble at partial loads due to excessive Exhaust Gas Recirculation. They are fairly inexpensive and easy to replace.

The APP Sensors is one of those parts that if it is not coded, then you need to look at live data and monitor the PIDS. You are looking for any fluctuation in voltage readings, should be steady as you go through the full range.

Keep in mind that the Throttle Body also has 2 sensors

The 2 sensors are for redundancy (Drive by Wire) and this system is closely monitored and should trigger a code if there are any discrepancies between the sensor signals.

Note: Depending on the scanner used, the voltage may be expressed as a (%)

DK10 CHECK THE APP SENSOR
  • Note: Take 10 seconds to carry out a full sweep of the accelerator pedal from fully released to fully applied to fully released.
  • Ignition OFF.
  • PCM connector connected.
  • APP Sensor connector connected.
  • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
  • Access the PCM and monitor the APP1 (VOLT) and APP2 (VOLT) PIDs.
  • Slowly press the accelerator pedal to the fully applied position and then slowly to the fully released position.

    Accelerator Pedal Position
    APP1
    APP2
    Pedal fully released
    0.61 - 0.97
    0.27 - 0.53
    Pedal fully applied
    3.59 - 4.6
    1.72 - 2.4

I did find a code when I scanned it. It was P2457. I cleared the code to see if it would come back but it has not. I have done the accelorator reset as suggested but no change.

P2457 = EGR Cooler Efficiency Below Threshold, so a restricted EGR Cooler, Low Coolant or a bad EGR Temp Sensor not reading correctly.
The sensor is also part of the feedback for EGR Flow, so for your stutter issue, it does possibly appear that the EGR valve is opening when it should not be open.
When you press the accelerator down farther you are overcoming the EGR flow.
To see it, you need to view Live Data.
It may not be related, but the EGR system is one of those systems that in order for a true diagnostic you need to view Live Data.

Now, is your coolant level - Full and maintain Full? or are you having to add coolant on a consistent basis?
You may have a leaking EGR Cooler, dumping coolant into the exhaust and possibly the cylinders.
They normally do not leak externally.

First thing I checked was the coolant and it is at the full mark when cold and I have never added coolant since new.

I'm up at my daughters cottage in northern Ontario so only reader I have is a code reader. Dealers in the area are booked for 3 weeks out so I'm looking to see if I can fix it. My daughter is coming up next weekend and can bring me the parts needed.

I have the sensor from Ford. Now waiting for pinch clamps. No one has them up here.

Happy to report 1) Amazon saves the day and had me the clamps in 3 days. I am in the middle of nowhere remember and 2) The issue was the EGR sensor and the truck is running perfect. Thank you to all the help given. Doing it myself cost under $200 CAD, that's like $50 for you guys in the USA.
Haha.
The part number I used was: KA1Z-5L200-A
This is just the sensor, no replacement clamps so you will need two 17.4 mm pinch clamps.

Thanks again guys.
