As a college professor, I have some hope I can change this type of stupidity with my students. It is a small hope but it is hope nonetheless. ?

Good luck my friend as you have your work cut out for you. ?

my buddy went to Charlotte NC for a job this week. I text him on the way to fill up in Va because of shortages in NC. He text me this morning all the stations he's been by are out. He said it's people hoarding, filling large containers.

If people would buy what they need the supply might be getting back to normal by the time they need gas again.
I hear you. We have become a nation of idiot sheep I'm afraid.

I was able to fill up my tank yesterday in Delaware with no crowds and no problems. Hopefully everything will be back to normal pretty soon.

Looks like the pipeline is back up but it'll take a couple days to return to normal. I just wish is was that easy for people to "return to normal". :sunglasses:

"Colonial Pipeline initiated the restart of pipeline operations today at approximately 5 p.m. ET," the company said in a statement on its website. "Following this restart, it will take several days for the product delivery supply chain to return to normal."

Filling up now. Still going with 91 octane.

Although that is only 91, it is awesome to see that is pure gasoline. I bet your mileage is great with that. I used to run the same (we have 90 octane recreational gas here in WV) in a 2007 Ford Edge I had because the station was right next to me and I honestly could see anywhere form 2-4 more MPG some days.

The only time I like Ethanol is when it is E30 and above.

What happens if you have a 91/93 tune and you put in 87? Does the tune just become less effective? Or does it cause damage to engine?

I feel for you folks that are having to deal with the sticker shock of the rising prices. Unfortunately, $4 per gallon for 91 has been the norm here in SoCal for a while now. Our gas has gone up just over $1 a gallon since the new administration.

I believe what is referred to pinging can occur. Maybe its knocking. Im not sure, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once.

Answer: Yes, or so logic tells me.

Edit: Quick search of internet gives one explanation;

So, to summarize, the additional power that you get from a 93 octane tune has very little to do with the fuel itself other than being able to take advantage of the fact that the higher octane allows for more aggressive tuning parameters because the fuel will not pre-ignite when compressed at higher levels. More compression = bigger bang. The reason why you should never run a lower octane fuel on a vehicle tuned for higher octane fuel is because the tune has no way of detecting what fuel you are using and will continue to operate assuming you put in the correct fuel. This means that you increase your chances of blowing up your engine due to pre-ignition events that the tune cannot compensate for. You can run higher octane fuel, which on a car with a continuous variable valve timing system in place will yield a little benefit, but you should never run a lower octane fuel than what you were tuned for.

Just an FYI/heads up, refineries including for who I work for are starting to build stock, target is 90 to 180 days of product forecasting supply issues.... a lot of suppliers postponed or didn’t do complete turn arounds due to covid etc, and now it’s catching up, and adding to it is pipeline issues, labour issues, and some crude transportation issues. If you have the ability to I’d get a small safety net of Premium gasoline (or gasoline sans ethanol) and store it just in case...

Good luck sir. If all professor's were like you there would be a chance for the country in the future.

When I saw a report telling people to now put gas in plastic bags it made me wonder if we even have a chance.

The problem now is the same as it was when this started. When people see a station with gas they're on it like flies on shit. They'll sit in line, and waste a gallon of gas just to buy 2 gallons to top off their tank. Since I retired from my first job (LEO) I've worked hard to forgo the violence that came with it most everyday. But, stupid people seem to try my resolve too often these days.

Im not sure I agree with that internet search. Our stock ECU tunes for 93 and 87... It will automatically detune the engine for 87, it must have automatic knock sensors... So with a tune, id expect the same system to work.
