Please see video link about my transmission on 1st to 3rd gear shift.

Very interesting to know if this is normal.

Thank you.

Yes if you are not pushing it too hard it will skip a gear. I have been able to get on it and make it go to second, then let up and it will skip third. All in the name of fuel economy.

The video was more for the weird slipping issue not so much the skip shifting that it does. I learned that skipping gears is common on this transmission. I can’t possibly see how that’s good for the clutch packs but who knows we’ll see.

funny you should mention the 10r80 and shifting being weird...
some place around here is a collection of threads about transmission issues. the short version is :
1. a number of new rangers left ford about 1 - 2 quarts low on transmission fluid.
2. an updated pcm is out for most rangers, due to shifting problems.
3. if you take it to a dealer and it really acts up and your low on miles and early in ownership they will do a transmission flash / relearn. it has helped some no help for others.
4. if you go back after the flash does not help they may do the tsb for the new pcm, and another flash relearn.
5. if 2-4 do not work the dealers may replace valve body kit with a newer version. then do another relearn flash. this has helped some. not helped others.
6. when you get to this step and still have transmission problems you can join the small club of us lol.

honestly i think the pcm and flash will fix most. the ones getting new valve bodies are in a bit worse shape and thats sort of a band aid to make the transmission live past the warranty so ford can wash hands of them. My hunch is the ones in that boat are the ones that left the factory low on fluid, mixed with a flawed valve body and shift program leads to mechanical damages to clutches and so on.

It's normal, but not ideal. There's a big jump in gear ratios from 1st to 2nd/3rd, which is my guess is what we are experiencing with the feeling of slippage. It's going from a ratio 4:69 to 2:14 when skipping 2nd. This shouldn't hurt anything, remember when trans had 3 speeds?

Get a tune, problem goes away. I'll recommend Unleashed.
