The first iteration of this failed experiment was "desegregation and bussing " in the mid-70's that in the end did exactly what you expressed, lower the bar so all could get over rather than raise the skills of the "under privileged" so the 'old norm' could be achieved - the exact opposite of the planned. Watched this unfold in NC while stationed there.
'Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education' is 'ground zero' for the massive 'de-construction' that has been underway ever since.....

The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers. -Socrates (469–399 B.C.)

Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose (the more that things change, the more they stay the same...)

I got a .22 rifle !
When I was a lad, my dad taught/let me shoot his Remington .45 1911 he carried during the Battle of the Bulge when he was with the 82nd Airborne (the kick took a minute to get used to lol). He always kept a clip in it (but not a round in the chamber). He taught us all how to shoot. Fear and common sense kept us from getting it without his permission. I taught both my daughters (they are millennials) how to shoot with a .357 SW, .40 Glock, and .40 Beretta and I taught them the same healthy and safe respect/use for firearms my father did me regarding non-permission use.

Love listening to the old farts talk about the good old days, back when it was a crime to be gay and outright racism took its last glorious lap around the track. At least kids called you 'sir!' Oh, and knew a thing or two about analog clocks, for Pete's sake!

My office runs just fine with Gen X through Gen Zs at the wheel. One day, we too will join the ranks of tan windbreaker-wearing curmudgeons, gullets brimmed with bile, collecting slights and cultivating anger. Ah, the golden years! :)

I get it. The metric system is all based on '10', making easy conversions. It was invented for people who can't to math.

Man, I thought the receipt was just funny. Then the thread took a real "get off my lawn" turn.

I spent about 15 years in the service industry and I can say for sure that the staff at any restaurant is a good cross-section of society. The people working there are smart, dumb, young, old, conservative, liberal, etc. The people up front aren't there for their critical thinking skills. They are there because they are supposed to either be eye candy or good with customers. The kitchen staff is usually pretty smart (in my experience). Yes, there are idiots, but you can't spend much time around knives and fire if you don't have 2 brain cells to rub together. Hell, look at this thread. We've got people who are able to look at historical data and provide sources for well-reasoned arguments, and we've also got people who think vaccines are used to kill people and have a medical degree from the University of Facebook. Sometimes I wish things were actually bad so people would have a legit reason to bitch.

It's going to be okay. I promise.

Now, back to the damper discussion...
Some of the greatest truth ever spoken, but you forgot to add "convicted felons" to that list. 40 years in the biz, I've done everything from dish to own. A lot of people look down on this industry, and it's employees but eh...stereotypes...they exist for a reason.

On a good day, a good server will make more than a GM. On the best days, the best bus boys can make almost as much. Some of our servers are pulling 6 figures. The bartenders definitely are. I always say, my next job, I'm targeting a high end restaurant and applying for bus.

And this "but you can't spend much time around knives and fire if you don't have 2 brain cells to rub together"- there's a good chance that kitchen is where you're going to find one of those convicted felons, so never mess with the kitchen staff. The two brain cells they have usually aren't the ones associated with sensible decision making.

And servers are not servants. Be nice. And sometimes customers can be some of the biggest idiots. *Samuel L Jackson voice*: "shake that half full water glass at me one more time, mother..."

You sure about that?
Well, not almost. About 15 states pay at least $12/hr. 6 or 7 already pay over $13/hr.

Federal minimum wage probably should be raised. However, when it was instituted, it was meant for normal people to make at least that much. These days, the Federal minimum wage really just exists to make sure teenagers in high school with no real responsibilities are making at least that much. There's almost no business these days paying less than $10/hr. It's just not a thing.

If you're an adult making minimum wage these days, that's a you problem, not a government problem.
