Ughhhh! Transmission Puked Fluid AGAIN!

Back in February 2025, I posted about an experience coming home from the beach on an hour drive home on the highway, and the transmission seeming to wig out, bang hard, and there being a smell of hot transmission fluid. When I got out of the truck, just off the interstate, I found there was transmission fluid all over.

I had a service done on the truck some time before that, but hadn't really driven it that much, and there was a belief that the pan may have been overfilled. The dealership said they believe it had "just burped" and the fluid levels were looking okay.

Fast forward to this morning! I had to get up early and take the wife 30 minutes down the road to the airport, on I-95. No issues. I took the turnpike back north to the house, and when I went to go pass someone, accelerating from 80 to 85, it felt like the truck was hitting a rev limiter and retarding ignition. It just felt like it didn't want to go.

I got to the house, and smelled hot transmission fluid. Ughhhh.

Once it was daylight, I went back out to the truck and there is fluid all over under there. Mostly under the transmission cross member, but also around the pan, and you can see where it has just blow all under the truck, starting from the sway bar back. There are also a couple of drips on the ground.

Damn. I don't know what to do next. This is awesome - my extended warranty ended this past May!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAH! Of course!

I think that it was still overfilled and is only venting the fluid when you do long drives and get the transmission temperature high. If it is overfilled, it will foam when hot and vent. The foaming fluid will also cause the seeming lack of power that you experienced.

Don't trust the dealer to get fluid level right , got mine back, 1 1/4 quart to full.

I would go make the same drive again and see how it acts now... it may be down to the correct level, or closer anyway...

Best thing I’ve done so far is to install a PPE pan and Mikes Build Shop dipstick. Might help venting but sure makes it easier to check the level and add or take out fluid.

You might check to see if the vent is plugged. Sometimes little bee's will crawl in and build a dirt nest in it. I saw a video where a shop had replaced a transmission pan gasket twice that was leaking. Looked at the vent and it was plugged by dirt.

If dealer didn’t do it right the first time what makes you think they got it right the second time? I know there’s some trust involved but trust requires verification

You need to address this YESTERDAY. If it were overfilled it will indeed "burp" the bubbles out the vent hole along with fluids. Those bubbles that are created when the excess fluid is whipped around like your Cafe Latte drink. When those bubbles enter the circuits inside your transmission you get that slipping (you apply power when in gear and engine revs but no acceleration). Don't keep driving it and hope it just keeps burping until the fluid level is right, which the dumb-ass dealership alluded to "it just burped" comment. flush the fluid and replace with correct amount of fluid. Who replaced your fluid? Idiots.

This may or may not apply to 5th Gen Rangers but, the correct way to fill transmission fluid is to stop about a quart short of the book value. Start the engine and warm it all up. Then with engine running, cycle through all the gears staying on each for a few seconds. Then go back and check fluid level. Fill to correct level SLOWLY, and repeating the checks over and over until fluid level is correct.
