I just swapped out the factory speakers in my XLT and added amps and a sub (kept the factory head unit), on a relatively modest budget, and it made a huge difference. I didn't want or need window shaking bass or tons of power, and this setup really added some oomph, provided really clear sound, and built up the low end. $600 all in, including installation.

Here's what I added:
1. Infinity Basslink SM compact amplifier and 8" subwoofer. Tucked under the passenger seat:

2. Infinity 4 channel amp (6004A). This fit behind the head unit in the dash.

3. Infinity Reference 6 1/2" - rear doors

4. JBL 601CF - front doors

Pretty happy with the result, and I've had to turn down the bass level on the sub - it really cranks.

You mind sharing and details of your install?

Sorry guys I had these components professionally installed. While I gleefully tear into the dash of my 99 Tahoe, I was too nervous to dig into this brand new truck.

Do you have the power seats on your truck? Wondering if the sub will fit with power seats.

Great post and ideas - I'm looking at the Ford tune before I look into this more closely but I will definitely start here. THanks

How do you think that subwoofer and amp would pair up with the stock (non-Bose) speaker system? I'd love to get a sub without having to change the door speakers (just yet).

I think you could use this setup with the stock speakers with the gain adjusted so you dont blow up the oem speakers. I would not hesitate too much to do this upgrade with a plan to do the speakers in the future. You could probably push the oem's one a little bit more but not much

Gotcha thanks!! I pulled the trigger on the Kicker version from Crutchfield, I'll post pics and a review when I get it.

I missed this on first read of the thread - I couldn't do it as I looked at the manual for the amp and noted that first thing....and I wouldn't want to do the doors. If it could have been done I might have had them throw on some sound deadening in the doors. If you don't mind how much was the install?

That is an excellent sub. I had one in my Wrangler and it sounded pretty darn good. Are you planning on putting it under the seat like the OP? Make sure you post up some install-info and pics!
Ideally I would like to put it behind the rear seat but if I have to I will put it under the passenger seat. Will def post photos!

Do you happen to have power seats? Trying to figure out where I would put this if I picked one up.
I don't have the power seats, but even still the space seems real limited, I'm hoping behind the backseat works.
