Hi folks!

First post, thanks for allowing me into the group.

So, I'm looking for another mid-size P/U to replace a 2012 Tacoma.

I haven't really kept up with the market until I recently started looking again, and I was shocked to see the number of vehicles that are currently having paint failure issues.
The problem appears to be with several manufacturers makes and models, and Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma seem to be 2 trucks that have high paint failure rates, particularly in white(which I'm not considering).

Anyway, I am considering looking for a used 2023 Ranger XL Super Cab 4X4, preferably in Carbonized Gray if I can find one.

I'm aware of the drivetrain issues with some rangers in this Gen, but honestly, I'm more concerned with having to deal with paint failure than drivetrain issues, as dealers and manufacturers aren't doing squat to cover most paint failures, which can currently cost upward of 12K for a total repaint of one of these trucks from what I've read.

And at least I can buy extended warranty coverage on the Ranger for most issues other than paint, so I'm just trying to cut my losses ahead of time.

Boy, when I bought my Tacoma new 13 years ago (and every other vehicle I've bought since 1979) I never would've thought I'd have to face a delima like this now. So sad that EPA had to get involved with the current paint formulations.

Anyway, sorry for being so long-winded, but would appreciate any input you may have regarding gen5 Ranger paint failure issues.

TIA

Haven't heard or seen any paint issues here. The black roof gutter trims though have had paint/powder coat failure causing some corrosion issues.

23's should not (I hope  ) have the 10R80 tans issues depending on the build date maybe, as I believe I've seen on here where Ford addressed them with the new updated drums, I could be wrong though.

Paint is thin on these Rangers, but I dont recall seeing reports of bubbling or fading.
But they scratch if you look at them sideways.

From what Ive read here the late '23 '22 models have the updated drums. Hopefully this is true because that's my truck. lol

As far as peeling paint there hasn't been any issues with the body paint peeling. Just keep a good coat of wax on them (preferably 303 Graphene 😜 ) and you'll be good.

Appreciate the info!
Yeah, I've heard the same about the black roof gutter trim as well.

Good luck with your truck, sounds like you got a good'un. Sadly, we usually only hear about about the ones with issues, which is good so we are informed as consumers. But I also know the majority of Rangers don't have these issues.
Thanks again!

Welcome! In my opinion, the paint is extremely thin and not applied well at all. On the plastic panel between bumper and grill, I had the paint come up from a regular garden hose. It scratches very easily in my experience. The paint on the pinch welds on my truck was so bad I had to bring it back shortly after buying it, it all had to be stripped and redone. (There were basically paint drips that would fall off constantly leaving bare metal. I think I have a thread about it). If paint is the biggest concern and you really liked the ranger, maybe a wrap could help protect it, but I’m unsure of the cost.

Thanks, that's encouraging about the late model 23's.
Yeah, that's the main reason I started looking at Rangers recently, I haven't heard much obout paint issues.

Tacoma and Frontier both have FB Groups specifically dedicated to peeling paint issues.

Appreciate the info.

Did they just strip and redo those area's, or whole truck?
Edited: Nevermind, just read your thread in this.

Yeah, I've heard others say similar about Ranger paint scratching easily. Guess that's better than total paint failure, but still sub-par for any vehicle.

One thing you have to remember is that most people (myself included) are more inclined to write bad reviews rather than good ones. When you go out and get a bad meal you feel like you need to complain about it and jump online to write a bad review. Most don't do that if you had a great meal or outstanding service.

While the Ranger has had it's share of issues you have to look at the over picture, especially on the forum. There's just over 20K members so we make up a very small fraction of what's been sold over the last 5 years of the Gen 5. There's many with their 2019 Rangers who've had zero issues (trans & HVAC heater box were common in that year) while several did have these issues. Anything mass produced is going to be prone to failure and it's always a crap shoot if you're getting a good one or a lemon. For the most part the Ranger has been a great truck (I'm on my second one) but by know means is it perfect.

If you're worried and want to protect your investment I'd seriously consider getting a new Gen 6 and after a year if you're happy with it add on an extended warranty. You can add these up 'till the 3/36 and there's several dealers selling them for just over cost. Do not buy it at your dealer as you'll pay almost double for one there.

Yes, I agree that we mostly hear of the negative experiences people are having on these types of forums, as opposed to the vast majority of other owners having possitive experiences with their Rangers, as I eluded to in my response to veedubturner.

I would actually prefer to get a 2025 vs 2023, but I need a 6' bed, which Ford foolishly (IMO) decided to eliminate from their 2025 configurations.

I appreciate your input.
Thank you.

Anytime!

Just an fyi the Ranger bed is only 5' for all their models. I had to get a bed extended to be able to carry my 6' ladder for work.

I know that the gen 6's (2024+) are all 5' beds, but I'm pretty sure the gen 5's were offered with 6' beds in the Super Cab (extended cab) and 5' beds in the Super Crew with the full back doors and back seats.
Of course I could be mistaking.
