I had Posterior Vitreous Detachment and needed Vitrectomy to clean up the floaters... easier experience compared to my previous cataract surgery...they had me sedated semi-conscious and I couldn't see anything during the surgery...I was lucky that I didn't have retina work so I didn't have to lay face down during recovery...the patch comes off at the follow-up next day and all was great except my eye looked like a bloody mess...no pain though...after a week, the redness goes away and I'm looking forward to have the right eye done next month...Good luck, James!I just did a search for vitrectomy and did expect any results. But lo and behold here you are. I am scheduled for the procedure May 6 to remove floaters. How did yours go?
Wow, that really helps put my mind at ease. Mine was for my third retinal detachment. The first two, they were able to laser down. The third one they decided to go in and fix it right and clean up the first two. This was after having a retinal vein occlusion in that eye along with cataract surgery in both. I've had over 50 shots in that eye for the oclusion. Now I'm developing a secondary cataract, I need to take care of. But I still have pretty good vision out of that eye and don't need glasses to drive. My retinologist was a miracle worker. What made you have to get the vitrectomy? How was the recovery? Mine is next week for big ass floaters.
Thank you so much for your insight. I am a little apprehensive, but this helps. This floater is driving me crazy! It is really a safety hazard when driving. I am not riding my Harley until this is over and done.Mine was for my third retinal detachment. The first two, they were able to laser down. Recovery from the vitrectomy wasn't bad. Just everything until the eye refills with fluid. And as it refills it looks like it is filling from the top down. As you tilt your head from side to side and it slashes. Your vision clears as it fills because of the different refraction indexes of the gas and the liquid. It is a weird sensation. It is not painful and having no floaters is great.
Sorry for the long post, but I've gone through a lot with that eye.
I have had those floaters for several years now they are very annoyingThank you so much for your insight. I am a little apprehensive, but this helps. This floater is driving me crazy! It is really a safety hazard when driving. I am not riding my Harley until this is over and done.
Secondary cataract on your synthetic cataract lens? They can clear those with laser...Mine was for my third retinal detachment. The first two, they were able to laser down. My retina specialist told me everybody develops cataracts, and that the vitrectomy can make it sooner rather than later. One thing I know, is that if you haven't had your cataracts replaced with synthetic implants, you are guaranteed to develop cataracts after Vitrectomy...
Correct...but if you've had cataract surgery prior to Vitrectomy (as I have), then the synthetic lens is not prone to developing another cataract...My retina specialist told me everybody develops cataracts, and that the vitrectomy can make it sooner rather than later.
Oh, I see, good to know. I hope it will be awhile before I need cataract surgery. I'm only 57.Correct...but if you've had cataract surgery prior to Vitrectomy (as I have), then the synthetic lens is not prone to developing another cataract...
You're 10 years younger than me...this guy's story helped me to prepare for my surgery...Oh, I see, good to know. I hope it will be awhile before I need cataract surgery. I'm only 57.
Actual the secondary cataract has nothing to do with the lens implants. It is the back of the original lens capsule that is left in place during the original procedure. It clouds over giving the same symptoms as the original cataract. Yes it is a simple laser procedure to cut a hole in the capsule to allow you to see clearly again. Probably from all the shots of medication I had in that eye.Secondary cataract on your synthetic cataract lens? They can clear those with laser...

Correct...I also learned that every single one of us, our vitreous fluid will break down as we age and may cause Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD)...this can be benign or cause retinal detachment... depending on individual conditions, this may or may not need Vitrectomy depending how bad your floaters are...some people just get used to them but for me, it was creating unsafe vision for driving...Actual the secondary cataract has nothing to do with the lens implants. The truth is everyone has cataracts, it is a natural part of your eyes aging. It is just a matter of how fast they progress and if they get to the point if needing to have something done.
That guy is very informative. Kind of a rambler, I wish he would stay on topic at some points. You're 10 years younger than me...this guy's story helped me to prepare for my surgery...
