I can't seem to find my answer on google.
I see folks trying to resell their tuners on FB and CL for near msrp.
I am wondering if they could just charge someone to install the tune on the vehicle or if you actually have to tie the tuning device to one vehicle at a time

In a way yes and at the same time no. Great example is the fact on how I bought a livernoise tune years ago for my 2019 Ranger. I was able to tune that Ranger with no issues. If I needed any updates I could go back to livernois and get some updates done if needed. If I wanted to tune another vehicle whether it be my own or someone else's I would have to go through livernois and have them unlock the device for a set price so I could tune said vehicle. If a tuner has already touched a vehicle it is going to have to be reset by the tuner in order to tune a second vehicle.

Well it's a smart move on their part but wildly disappointing. I am dying to get that extra power for sand dunes but that's a tough sell to the wife

I got the livernoise tuner used from a great guy her on the forum.. there’s a few to transfer, you have to download your truck info into it and it sends that back to them and they send you the tunes based on what you want… I think it was about 300 or something (after the purchase of the used tuner..which still looked and felt like it was never used) and it came with a tow tune, a 91-93 octane tune, and return to stock… also I believe there was a option to add additional tunes for a additional cost …(possibly a fuel economy tune idk)…
Benefits of the tune (FP or Livernoise) truck wakes up from the coma it comes in.. also lots of feedback involving much improved shifting logic for the transmission.. for a selling point I suppose it could be argued that the tune in some respect could help improve not just performance.. also improve the ride quality (if you like stretching ?) via the previous mentioned shifting stuff being more gooder… some even boasted improvements in fuel economy too… besides worst case scenario you could pull the it’s my “Christmas gift” and get it voiding the need to get wifeys approval ?…?

You could do the buy her something pretty first and then get the thing you want ?.

I was saving skid plates and offroad bumpers as my "christmas/birthday gift" excuse
???

IT WAS $300 TO GET THE TUNER TRANSFERRED?! That seems outrageous

Ooooo I’d stick with getting the skids and bumpers, get the tune later.. also if you plan on getting any performance “bolt ons” (intake, exhaust, intercooler, hot pipe, cold pipe…etc) get all that first.. if you go get a tune i believe you will be asked about any supporting mods you may have.

Exactly. It's 30 seconds of effort on their end. I see this in the MC industry as well. I usually avoid outfits that do this.

A "tune" is nothing more than changing a few data points in spreadsheet. I doubt they are testing each and every "tune' for a said configuration.

Did you read this somewhere? $300 is ridiculous. So you like pissing away money?
I don't buy something if I feel its pissing away something. At the same time I don't feel entitled to a companies product because of my personal opinion on its perceived value.

I talk shit about a lot of overpriced bullshit in the "off road market" - but never had made the argument "well I should get it (the specific product) for less because reasons".

When you lack insights, you are entitled to your opinion.

Like a let the computer do the majority of the work figuring it out sort of thing?
I’m sure the technology has changed and got better.. but I don’t think I could just go switching some values in the spread sheet and return with favorable results.. there is research and development of the product involved which I’m sure requires significant risk and financial investment on the original product creators shoulders….. my experience with the company has been great.

if $300 is too much.. its a decent amount of money and its true I would’ve liked it to be less expensive… anyway I ask if $300 is too much what would the price point be at for you to find it acceptable?

There's two things in play here: Actual mapping changes, and in your example, it's a simple change of ownership. The latter should be free. As for mapping changes, what's typical for a modified map is in the range $50-$85. This is reasonable, sorry, but $300 is not, regardless of reputation.

Again, these are really easy changes, and you have no idea what they are actually doing other than what they may be telling you. Now if they are adding exhausts or other aftermarket parts as part of their mapping, that's more involved, but I don't think most go to this level of effort after create a broad, general purpose tune that can be repurposed for just about anyone. They wouldn't need to make any more changes at this point. Lastly, mapping changes are simple, really simple.
