In 2015 I bought a F150 XLT SuperCrew 4x4 and after much hand wringing I went with the UnderCover Flex hard folding Tonneau. Functionally, it did fine but it had a few niggling issues that made me decide to look at other options for the Ranger I bought last month to replace the F150.
What I didn’t like about the UnderCover:
-Overly complicated install with rails and clamps along side the bed. It took close to or over an hour to install working by myself.
-Tools required to remove/reinstall. Once the rails are installed it isn’t too complicated to remove and replace the cover, but need to have wrench to do so.
-HEAVY panels. Trying to open from one side could be a pain and my wife couldn’t do it at all
-Not happy with the way the finish weathered
Having the sleekest/lowest profile wasn’t important to me and after looking at the options in my price range (<$900) and reviews, I decided on the Extang Solid Fold 2.0. $880+tax from Amazon, ordered on 9/18, delivered on 9/20 (love Amazon Prime!)
First thing I noticed was how much lighter the Solid Fold is compared to the Flex.I didn’t weigh either but the Extang is much easier to open. The next plus was the install of the Extang was a total BREEZE compared to the UnderCover Flex.
Total time start to finish was about 30 minutes including reading directions, getting tools, etc. Majority of that was getting the filler piece in place at the front of the bed. I have the drop in bed liner, so had to drill holes to access the mounting points. Once that was done, the cover was in place and tightened down in less than 10 minutes.
I like the look of the Extang and that it rides on the bed instead of on rails. Sitting a bit above the bed doesn’t bother me at all. I also prefer the finish and look of the Extang over the Flex.
One thing I will miss with the Extang Is that it can’t open fully and be propped in place like the Flex. That was useful with the Flex, especially considering that removing/replacing the cover required tools. On the bright side though the clamps that secure the cover to the truck are tightened down by hand, no tools needed. Having the bed filler in place it is less than 5 min to take the cover off or put it back on. Much less complicated than doing so with the Flex.
Only other negative with the Extang so far is there is not a lot of room to work the locking clamp/levers at the rear of the bed when I have my AMP Research Bed Extender in. Have to put the levers straight down to pass between the side of the bed and extender then reach through extender bars to lock them in place. Can’t really blame Extang for that though.
