3600mi and change on this truck, I've been babying the hell out of it.

Just yesterday started getting some kind of noise on acceleration coming from what I assume is the drive line.

It's not speed related, but does seem to be induced under load, highway on ramp, pulling out into traffic and getting up to speed, those sort of scenarios.

I wouldn't describe it as grinding, or whistling, something between... whirring? Sounds like something spinning that's not happy. I know everyone is normally worried about the trans on these but it's shifting just fine, zero issues there.

In all honesty, it's performing fine... but there's noise there that wasn't before, something's up. So to the freakin' dealer we go ? at 3600mi

Fuckin ridiculous.

Might be worth checking rotating parts like belts, or... you hearing the turbo?

Why am I suddenly hearing it starting yesterday?

I checked all the boost hoses and stuff that I could, everything appears secure, hose clamps are tight. Nothing appears loose or ill fitting. Everything is still brand new.

I'll give the belts a tug. ETA been driving this for six months despite the low miles, it's not the first time the turbo has spooled up. This isn't a 'happy' sound.

Belts are tight, I don't have the tool to flex the tensioner and check that ??‍♂

Checked the air box, filter didn't get sucked out of place or anything that's where it should be and properly positioned.

Possibly have a helper, hold foot on the Brake and Load the engine, to possibly locate the noise.
STAND TO THE SIDES - of the truck - you never know (Be Safe)
This would help pinpoint Engine or Driveline noise.

None available presently. Although, tried basically the same idea myself. I put it in drive, twice, stood on the brake and loaded it up a bit. Didn't hear it. Did this before and inducing the noise. Negative results.

Went out around the neighborhood, induced it driving around revving up a bit. Pulled over. Tried dropping into park, revved up to 4500 2x, nothing.

Back into drive, noise returned at about 3k on the way home.

It's not constant though, it's only under acceleration. If I let off, disappears. If I accelerate with less vigor it's less likely to rear it's head.

I'm no mechanic but feels drive line to my non professionally tuned ear. When I plug in my reader the truck is more or less always under some small degree of boost so if the turbo was going I'd expect to hear it a lot more.

This seems like something that has to put the right amount of torque on the drive shaft to make it show up.

Even loaded up again when I got home after all of this, in drive, maybe 3k-3500k rpm worth, standing on the brake... no noise. Trucks gotta be moving to bring it out.

Checked Forscan, no DTCs, active or stored

Almost sounds like the fan clutch is engaging.

That sounds like it's missing. As in misfire.
Nah. I've been in multiple vehicles misfiring, this isn't that. That triggers a check light, we've got none here. It also typically starts rocking the car because when she's misfiring the the timing or whatever is off and the whole engine starts rocking around.

If this is a misfire I'd be shocked but relieved that's an easy fix.

??‍♂ We're into the dog days of summer now. I'd think that would be running for longer than when my foot is on the gas, no?

I checked the little crumbly hose the clutch wiring sits on that's still good for now.

Tailshaft centre bearing??
I don't think I'd be the first. Checking it is probably beyond my ability. I don't have a lift.

Probably, but not necessarily at full speed. If you're using a code reader or an app to monitor PIDs you can monitor the cooling fan RPM in real time. At 80°f ambient my fan turns about 40rpm @ 900rpm engine speed. At 1100rpm cold start the fan is at about 135rpm. I haven't checked it at cruising speed, but my guess is it would be close to 300rpm. I'll check that tomorrow when I'm on the road.

The point is called 'Visctronic Cooling Fan Speed Sensor' and is under the 'Ford, Lincoln, Mercury' specific PIDs.

I'll try it between now and the appointment on Monday. Hopefully it doesn't sit three for three freakin' weeks ?

I'm reading through the center support bearing thread for the driveshaft. Lot of people had that popping up in the first 3-10kmi in 22'

One person described it as a brake pad dragging. That might be a good way to describe the sound. I wouldn't quite call it metal grinding, but it sounds like something that's dragging on something that's rotating, so a a wet or dirty brake pad that you're dragging with your foot on it lightly might be another way to describe what I'm hearing ?

Oh boy, I hope your outcome isn't a rebuild, or at least under warranty
