Mine does the same and it has picked up several bike rides and recorded them as drives. Called the company and they were surprised. I have the option to choose "This was not a drive" on the app after a drive is recorded. I should probably disable the app when biking.

I'll have to remember that when the weather is warmer. Can't wait to get out on the Harley.

Not illegal to own a GPS j@mmer or a C&ll Phone j@mmer... But illegal to use.

Police use them and man in the middle cell phone devices all the time. Ever notice cell phone coverage dropping when things go south? And those nasty surveillance aircraft circling a locale for hours on end.

They get all the cool toys.

I read an article where a sex offender was able to be tracked via Google Maps usage, so it isn’t a conspiracy - even when not actively sharing analytics data law enforcement can use Google Maps and other services to find someone. I also know a decade ago OnStar already had the ability to locate and disable a stolen vehicle, so if they can remotely cut the ignition, you better be sure they know when you went to the mall or the movies (so they can give you more ads for discount tickets and clothing) the next time you take the family SUV shopping!

He says it's legal to use a lockpick to pick your own locks but it's illegal to use a jammer to jam your own GPS.

I think the big issue is they can jam aircraft comms and other stuff. Sorta like how they will come down hard on ham operators that don't have a license cause they can fudge up all kinds of stuff. There was a guy using a very low powered unit to sleep on the job (company truck with tracker) but he parked next to an airport and disrupted the air traffic controllers.

I used to have a couple police scanners too, it's great for knowing what's going on in your neighborhood but I've heard they have gone digital now and you can't listen in anymore.

Police went digital about 8 years ago where I live. Same with ambulance and fire. Quite a few (legitimate) local hobbyists were p'd off. Glad I found out b/c I was just about to purchase a scanner and join the fun. Would have wasted a bit of cash....

On a somewhat humorous (?) note, was told the ambulance services went digital/encrypted because of HIPAA privacy concerns!

Here is a shot of one of the bicycle rides (which was mostly on a bike/hike trail where vehicles are not allowed) the app recorded and which showed only part of the ride but not all of it...

If you are concerned about stuff like this, then you should definitely NOT have a smart phone. Smart phones are the best data collection devices ever created. We live in the age of Big Data. It is very difficult to avoid it.

And definitely don't put you insurance app on the phone, even if it's 'just for insurance verification' cause I'm sure once they are in, they see it all.

Oh and I just got my progressive insurance renewal. Went up another $50. I have a $2k deductible already and they keep raising it. I'm about to curse them out.

And you don't even have to be using Google maps at the time. If you have logged into any Google account, be it chrome, YouTube, maps, or used any GPS app, they will collect you location data. You can delete all that data in your Google account and 'stop' location data, but honestly, I think that just hides it from yourself, they probably still keep it.

I have Ford Pass, Progressive Snap shot, and am tracked with my iphone.

With Progressive's Snap Shot app I can see everywhere I have gone, all mapped out. I even know how many hard brakes, fast starts, and phone time I did. It supposedly knows when I am a passenger or driver, but I think that is a guess. My wife gets the same data so we can change who was driving. Progressive does not really care, they insure us both for the car. They dont care who makes Hard Brakes, only that it happens.

Wife can see my location anytime.

Ford knows my odometer, oil percentage, and gallons of fuel.
