Now I have a '22 Ranger, I want to get a set of 1/4 & 3/8 drive Torx bits.
Whats the largest size I would encounter ?
Fwiw,
I'm tools equipped well above average as far as a Shadetree goes and have a pile of misc. Torx tools.
But since Ranger is my first extensively Torx vehicle, I'd like to get organised set the basics to combine with whatever I already have to get a job done.

Hi SH,

I think T50 will be you largest necessary...smallest is likely T5....others here might have different experiences that they can relay to you....

Best,
Phil

All I can remember is I have used quite a but of Torx and E-Torx(inverted style). Best to try and get a good set all together

Torx are expressed in millimeters of the tool bite. I’ve used 1 mm to 24 mm. There are bigger and smaller. Not just sure of the Ranger range. And yeah I’ve used Allen head in some situations.

Like Phil said T50 should be good. Pretty sure that used to be the size on superduty bed bolts too.

Torx are not expressed in millimeters. I'm not sure what the sizes convert to, but a T60 is equal to a 12mm Allen wrench, and a T5 looks to be 1 mm diameter; 5:1? I have a T60 to remove the 12mm hollow front axle bolt on my motorcycle, which is Allen head. Pictured is a T5 from my T5-T10 set (also incl 3 flat blade & 2 Phillips heads) and my Craftsman T60 1/2 in drive socket.

I use the T5 set to remove and lose the screws in $4 lcd wristwatches.

Oh no!!!! If a T60 socket = 12 mm, then a T50 must equal 10mm!! Better buy a couple dozen.

I found a nice Husky set at home depot fora reasonable price. They seem to be well tempered and haven't been able to damage one yet. Harbor freight over hardens theirs and they snap right off I found.

Its odd though, the T50 I have seem real sloppy when inserted into the head and I'de hate to destroy the head on that bolt. But it appears that T50 is the correct one from all I have read. I think I'll buy another T50 and see if there is any difference. Any thoughts?

There is a wide variance of "fit" between different manufacturers, and you do get what you pay.
With cheaper there/could be a lot of "slop", even when the tool and the fastener are new. Better quality will usually have a very snug fir which will prevent a lot of stripping/galling of the fastener head.
I have a set of Snap On that are probably 20 years old and still fit perfectly. Also have an older set of Craftsman that are still good, but I don't know about quality of the current stuff.....Lowes carries Craftsman now.

A poor set can have an "ear" snap off or round off destroying the fastener, leaving you to have to cut it off.
Stay away from Harbor Freight stuff.
Gearwrench makes a good quality set.
If you can find a Kobalt set at Lowes, they are good quality. Any set from a brand name should be OK

Thanks Grumpaw, however it turns out bolts are Torx T50 Plus, they must have changed during production at some point for some crazy reason too.
